How To Bet On NY Islanders In New York

For those looking to bet on the New York Islanders, it can be done in many ways. If one is looking to place a bet in New York, it can be done on a computer, mobile device, or local casino sportsbook. Online gambling is now an option for all legal bettors in the state of New York.

In order to bet online or at a local casino sportsbook in New York, you must be 21 years of age or older. As displayed in the above table, online gambling is available in NY, NJ, or PA. You do not need to be a resident of that state, so it’s perfectly legal for New Yorkers to bet on the Islanders in any of these states.

There are also numerous different bets one can make on the Islanders. People are able to bet on odds per game, odds of making the playoffs, winning the Stanley Cup, or even make prop bets, such as how many assists a certain player can get in a game.

But, in order to legally do so, one must abide by the regulations set in each state, which has been clarified above.

Quick Recap of the 2021-22 Season

The New York Islanders finished the season with a 37-35-10 record and 84 team points. That was good enough to finish ninth in the Eastern Conference. While that puts them as the first team out of the playoffs, they weren’t really close to making it. There was a 16-point differential between them and the Washington Capitals in 8th place. All eight Eastern Conference teams in the playoffs had 100 or more team points.

After a rough 2-8-0 stretch in November, the Islanders never fully recovered. They were sitting at 7-12-5 prior to a stretch that featured a number of wins and eight games postponed due to COVID. They tended to hover with an even record up until the end of March.

March was the strongest month with a 10-6-1 record. On April 3, the team had its best record at 32-27-9 and 73 team points. But April saw inconsistency, and they just never could get into a position of taking a playoff spot in the East.

Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal finished with a team-high 59 points. Nelson accounted for 37 total goals on the team this season through 72 games. Barzal was a great distributor with 44 assists. The defensive-minded team generally doesn’t have any players that go off on offense, but these two players were the most reliable, along with Noah Dobson with 13 goals and 38 assists, throughout the season.

How To Bet On The Stanley Cup In NY

Similarly, to placing a bet on a regular-season game, one can also place a bet on a specific team winning the Stanley Cup. This bet can be made at any time and the odds of the specific team may change as the season goes on.

In New York, bettors can bet on the Islanders at New York sportsbooks and see if they provide the odds on that. Most of the sportsbooks will carry odds on the Islanders and on the Stanley Cup.  In New York, the bet can be legally made online. Depending on which gambling app you are using will determine what odds are given to the team you are looking to bet on.

In this case, the odds on the New York Islanders of winning the Stanley Cup differ among various gambling apps. One reason as to why this occurs is because bookmakers look to balance their books. Essentially meaning that, if one team is receiving a lot of bets due to odds, the bookmaker can change the odds of another team to make it more appealing. That way more people will take those odds and thus, the books will be balanced.

At the moment, the New York Islanders do not have any odds at these sportsbooks. They did not make the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Once the postseason ends, futures odds should be available for the NY team. FanDuel Sportsbook would be one of those platforms with NHL odds when they are released. FanDuel currently offers a promotion for new users where they get a risk-free bet worth up to $1,000.

Most of those sportsbooks have odds for every sport. Some only have odds for golf and bowling. Two that do have odds on the Islanders winning the Stanley Cup are FanDuel and DraftKings

Both FanDuel and DraftKings take bets on each game as well as future bets, such as odds of making the playoffs, or, as alluded to earlier, odds of winning the Stanley Cup.

Of those sportsbooks that do offer odds on the Islanders, their odds may differ from each other. Again, there are numerous reasons as to why this happens, one being to balance the books. One team may be receiving too many bets and thus, a sportsbook may change the odds of another team.

How NHL Betting Odds Are Calculated

Betting odds in the NHL is very similar to betting odds in other sports. For each game, there is a money line along with a spread. Odds are calculated based on the expectations of teams, coupled with their season projection.

To make matters simple, let’s take a look at an example.

According to FanDuel, the Lightning were favored in their season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The moneyline for the Lightning was -164 and +138 for the Penguins.

What does the moneyline mean?

  • It means that the team you bet on has to outright win the game. The minus (-) sign indicates the favorite in the matchup and the amount you must bet in order to win $100. In this case, if you wanted to win $100 by betting on the Lightning, you would need to wager $164 (payout of $264).
  • The plus (+) sign indicates the underdog in the matchup and the amount you would win if you bet $100. So, a $100 bet on the Penguins would win $138 (payout of $238).

Popular Ways To Bet On The Islanders

When betting on a single NHL game, there are numerous ways to place wagers. The one highlighted in the above section is the moneyline.

There is also an over/under set before the game. If the number is set at 4.5 and you bet the over, that means the total goals scored between the two teams must be 5 or higher. In contrast, if you bet the under, that means the total goals scored between the two teams must be 4 or lower.

Prior to or during the game, you can also place bets on whether a tie will occur. Of course, these odds will drastically change throughout the course of the game as they are projected on statistical measures such as shots on goal, winning percentage, etc.

Another interesting bet to make on game day is a parlay bet. Parlay bets are when you make one bet with multiple games involved. You could bet on three games on one night. If you get all three correct, the amount you win is greater. If even one of your picks loses, however, you lose the entire bet.

What Is An NHL Futures Bet?

An NHL “futures” bet is a wager placed on an event that you think will occur in the future. One example of this has been touched upon earlier in the article: Stanley Cup odds. A Stanley Cup bet can be made at any time during the season.

Another example of a future bet is taking the odds on a team making the playoffs, or even winning their division. Again, those are bets that can be wagered anytime during the season.

How To Place Player Prop Bets On The Islanders

Player prop bets are fun side wagers that fans can engage in on a game-to-game basis. Essentially, a player prop bet is a separate bet where you can guess how many goals a player will score in a single game or some other statistical measure. For example, the over/under will be set at 1.5 and you have to bet on whether or not that player will score more or less than that number in a particular game. Another popular prop bet is where you bet which team scores the first goal.

Brief History Of The NY Islanders

The Islanders, or “Isles” as they are commonly referred to, joined the National Hockey League in 1972. In an effort to fend off the newly forming World Hockey Association, the NHL wanted another hockey team in the Big Apple.

The league brought in William Shea, the man responsible for bringing the Mets to New York 10 years earlier. Shea’s job was clear – bring another hockey team to New York and strengthen the NHL as the premier hockey league in the US. After much back and forth with the New York Rangers organization (who objected to the competition), Shea helped establish the Islanders as the second professional hockey team in the New York City area.

The Islanders At UBS Arena

Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum served as the home of the Islanders for almost 50 years, but it became outdated. They’ve also periodically played at the Barclays Center, home to the Brooklyn Nets.

The Islanders are now playing in their new arena, UBS Arena, at Elmont, New York. This $1 billion construction is a state-of-the-art, multi-use arena that is a joint venture with the Islanders owners, Oak View Group, and Sterling Equities. The Islanders began playing in their new home with the 2021-22 NHL season.

NY Islanders Stanley Cup History

In less than 10 years from their entry into the NHL, the Islanders were crowned Stanley Cup Champions. Beginning in the 1979-1980 season with their first Stanley Cup victory, a dynasty was born.

The team went on to win the Stanley Cup in four consecutive seasons 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1983. The Isles reached the Stanley Cup Finals again in 1984, but lose 4 games to 1 to the Edmonton Oilers. During their Stanley Cup Finals run, the Islanders would post an overall record of 16-3.

The Islanders In The 1980s:

  • 1980: First Islanders Stanley Cup Final victory
  • 1980-1983: 4 consecutive Islanders Stanley Cup victories
  • 1984: Islanders lose the Stanley Cup Finals to the Edmonton Oilers

Their four Stanley Cup titles tie them with their crosstown rivals the New York Rangers and give them one more than the Devils. Forming the backbone of these championship teams, were future Hall of Famers Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy, Billy Smith, Clark Gillies, and Denis Potvin.

As the early 1980s became the late 80s and 1990s, things turned south for the Islanders. Early playoff exits were quickly replaced by a playoff drought lasting seven years (1994-2000). The team again faced a playoff drought of five years from 2007 to 2012. Since the 2012-2013 season, the Isles have only missed the playoffs twice.

Islanders Top Rivalries

You’re safe in assuming that local area teams like the Rangers and the New Jersey Devils would stir up the biggest rivalry for the Islanders. After all, fewer places on Earth are more competitive than the New York tri-state area for professional sports.

But since the mid-1970s, there’s another NHL team that hearkens the most intense rivalry for the Islanders and their fans: the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Isles and Pens have met five times in the playoffs with the Isles prevailing in four of the five series. Overall, Pittsburgh has gotten the better of the Islanders, compiling a record of 133–118–22–12.
