Mike Tomlin has stepped down as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Does Tomlin become a candidate for the New York Giants’ head gig?
Mike Tomlin Steps Down
After 19 seasons, Tomlin will no longer be the head coach in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers announced Tomlin’s decision on Tuesday, one day after the Steelers lost to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round. Tomlin informed his players of the decision this afternoon.
“After much thought and reflection, I have decided to step down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Tomlin said in a statement. “This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team. I am deeply grateful to Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their trust and support. I am also thankful to the players who gave everything they had every day, and to the coaches and staff whose commitment and dedication made this journey so meaningful.

“I want to also thank Steelers Nation. Your passion, loyalty, and high expectations represent what makes this franchise truly special. Coaching in Pittsburgh is unlike anywhere else, and I will always take great pride in having been a steward of this team. While this chapter comes to a close, my respect and love for the Pittsburgh Steelers will never change. I am excited for what the future holds for this organization, and I will forever be grateful for my time coaching in Pittsburgh.”
Tomlin walks away from Pittsburgh as one of the game’s best head coaches.
Tomlin never had a losing season in 19 years with the Steelers. Tomlin registered an overall record of 193-114.
The highlight of Tomlin’s tenure was the Steelers’ victory in Super Bowl XLIII.
Despite Tomlin’s consistency, the Steelers have lost seven consecutive playoff games dating back to the 2016 season.
Tomlin now becomes one of the top names during this coaching cycle. If Tomlin wants a head coaching opportunity next season, he will get one.
Should the Giants Pursue Mike Tomlin?
If the Giants landed Tomlin as their next head coach, it would be an excellent hire.
However, there are some major caveats to consider when pursuing Tomlin.
Tomlin signed a contract extension in 2024 that keeps him with the Steelers through the 2027 season. The Steelers retain Tomlin’s coaching rights because he resigned under contract. Pittsburgh could receive compensation if another team wants to hire Tomlin before the end of the 2027 season.
The more likely option for Tomlin is to work in broadcasting for the 2026 season and return to the sidelines in 2027.
Sean Payton took a similar route. Payton covered the NFL at Fox for a year before being traded to the Denver Broncos for the 2023 season.
All signs indicate that the Giants are in heavy pursuit of John Harbaugh, whom the team could sign without giving up draft compensation.
The Giants probably won’t pursue Tomlin unless they miss out on Harbaugh or Kevin Stefanski.
