The Davie Police Department has reversed course on the alleged battery case involving Jets quarterback Geno Smith, announcing Monday evening that the incident is now ‘being further investigated by a detective’ and is considered active – after initially telling The California Post‘s Ed Lewis that no one was taken into custody and the investigation was closed.
What Happened at Geno Smith’s Florida Home
Officers responded to Smith‘s Davie, Florida residence around 4:40 p.m. Sunday for a reported battery incident. As this site’s original coverage of the viral video and initial allegations documented, a woman identified as Kristen posted an 80-plus-second Instagram Story claiming Smith physically assaulted her following a driveway argument.
Kristen alleged Smith ran outside and attacked her, broke her computer, threw her purses out, and stole money from her car. She also showed a clip of Smith speaking with uniformed officers on scene. Smith has not publicly commented on any of the allegations.
Davie Police Now Further Investigating the Battery Allegation
The department’s spokesperson told multiple outlets Monday evening: “It was determined that this case is being further investigated by a detective. It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time.”
That directly contradicts the department’s earlier stance, and no explanation was provided for why the position changed so quickly.
Both things can be true simultaneously: no arrest was made on scene, and an active detective investigation is now underway.
The honest qualifier sits right next to that – per ESPN‘s Rich Cimini, a Davie spokesperson had also characterized the case at one point as ‘not active but still being reviewed,’ adding another layer of confusion to an already inconsistent police communication record.
No public police report has been released. No arrest or formal charge has been recorded as of Monday’s update.
