The New York Giants are currently determining candidates for their next head coach. John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski are among the top names up for the job. Who will win the coveted position?
New York Giants Begin Coaching Search
The New York Giants have been preparing to find a new head coach since firing Brian Daboll in early November after a 2-8 start.
Daboll exceeded expectations in his first season, taking a below-average roster to the postseason with a 9-7-1 record. The Giants stunned the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round before eventually falling to the Philadelphia Eagles on Divisional Weekend.
Over the next three years, Daboll went 11-33, with the Giants transforming into one of the worst teams in the NFL.
Daboll’s firing was not a shock to many fans. However, the decision to keep general manager Joe Schoen turned many heads.
Schoen is now one of the leading figures running the Giants’ head coaching search. However, John Mara and Steve Tisch will have the final say on who will be the next head coach.
As for the team, the Giants surprisingly have several quality players in key positions.
The key is Jaxson Dart, whom the Giants selected in the first round of the 2025 draft. Dart put together an exciting rookie season — 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions with 487 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
If Dart can cut down on some of his reckless runs, he can be the Giants’ franchise quarterback.
Other players of note include left tackle Andrew Thomas, running back Cam Skattebo, defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, and edge rushers Brian Burns and Abdul Carter.
The cupboard is not bare in New York. The new coach will have some foundational players for 2026. Now, it’s on the ownership to find the right coach.
Giants Head Coaching Candidates
The name most associated with the Giants’ head coaching vacancy is Harbaugh. Earlier this week, the Baltimore Ravens fired Harbaugh after 18 seasons.
Harbaugh is a Super Bowl-winning coach who brings experience, discipline, and strong player development.
The speculation is that the Giants will hire Harbaugh if he wants the job. Harbaugh is expected to interview for the job next week.
Stefanski is the other leading candidate for the Giants’ job. The former Browns’ coach is a two-time NFL Coach of the Year and has a proven track record of winning with different quarterbacks.
Other candidates expected to be in the mix for the Giants’ job include Mike McCarthy, Kliff Kingsbury, Jeff Hafley, Chris Shula, and Lou Anarumo.
