Freeman’s Two-Hit Day Not Enough to Salvage Series Finale

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 4, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the High Point Rockers 6-3 on Sunday evening in the finale of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

High Point took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Hector Gomez’s RBI double to left field and a fielding error that allowed Gomez to score. Long Island evened the score at two on Ramon Cabrera’s RBI single to left in the second and Clint Freeman’s RBI double to right-center in the fourth.

The Rockers went back in front with a three-spot in the sixth inning. An RBI double by Jared Mitchell, a wild pitch that scored Mitchell and an RBI single by Michael Russell did the damage. L.J. Mazzilli doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, closing the gap to 5-3, but the Ducks could not pull even.

Ducks starter Brian Matusz did not factor into the decision. He tossed four innings in his Ducks debut, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out one. Rockers starter Chris Pennell (1-1) earned the win, tossing five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with one strikeout. Kevin McAvoy (0-5) took the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits and four walks in one and one-third innings of relief. Ryan Kelly picked up his sixth save with a scoreless ninth.

Freeman led the Flock offensively with a pair of hits.
