Prayers were answered this past May when legendary ex-Met Ed Kranepool received a new kidney, thanks to being a match to a generous Mets fan donor, Deborah Barbieri, of Glenwood Landing, NY. Ms. Barbieri was paying it forward, as her husband also received a new lease on life when he was the recipient of a new kidney.
Feeling better every day, Steady Eddie, 74, has decided to put his massive baseball memorabilia collection up for sale. Over the years from his 18-year playing career, or the hundreds of baseball card shows Kranepool has participated in, and the hundreds of personal appearances at golf tournaments and other benefits, Kranepool amassed a treasure trove of memorabilia, often getting his fellow teammates and friends on other teams to sign a few things or contribute some very interesting items.
And now, that collection is up for sale.
Not at a card show, or even in an auction, Kranepool is offering extremely interested collectors the opportunity to meet him at his home in Nassau County on Long Island, and purchase the items directly in a unique Meet and Greet.
Kranepool has hundreds of signed pictures, autographed baseballs, Miracle Mets records and lithos, bats, one-of-a-kind items and many group-signed products from the tournaments and other benefits. The names on those signatures and artifacts are legendary, including: Yogi Berra, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Lou Brock, Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, Johnny Mize, Andre Dawson, Robin Roberts, Don Zimmer, Luis Tiant, Alan Trammell, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Juan Marichal, Red Schoendienst, Pete Rose, and way too many more to list.
He even has unusual items such as photos from the moment Kranepool handed the ball from his 3,000th hit to Roberto Clemente, items from boxers, basketball players, or golfers from tournaments, such as Lee Trevino, and several beautifully framed lithos from the Joe DiMaggio Golf Tournaments, signed by numerous participants.
The sale, and the opportunity to visit the collection, is by appointment only, and for serious collectors only. Prices vary, but it’s not for bargain hunters. Then again, these are not your usual items for sale.
But it is a great way to help Krane pay for some of his medical bills that as we all know, are no bargains, either.
