Ducks Stymied by Skeeters in Series Opener

(Sugar Land, Texas, July 12, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 5-0 on Friday night in the opener of a six-game series at Constellation Field.

Sugar Land took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Ducks starter Seth Simmons on Zach Borenstein’s two-run home run to right field and Ryan Jackson’s sacrifice fly to center. A two-out throwing error in the fifth allowed Anthony Giansanti to score from second base, increasing the advantage to four.

Long Island put two on base with two outs in the seventh and collected a hit along with two walks in the eighth, but they were unable to pull even. Jason Martinson’s solo homer to left in the eighth rounded out the scoring.

Skeeters starter Joe Lienhard (1-0) earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out three. Simmons (5-5) took the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks over five innings with five strikeouts.

T.J. Rivera led the Flock offensively with a pair of hits.

The Ducks and Skeeters continue their six-game set on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT (6:05 p.m. CDT) at Constellation Field. Long Island returns home on Friday, July 19, to kick off a four-game against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 4:20 for a special pre-game softball game.
