Pitching Staff Leads Long Island Past Lancaster

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 28, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 4-2 on Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Lancaster opened the scoring in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to left field by Caleb Gindl off Ducks starter Alec Asher. Long Island responded in the bottom of the frame on a two-run home run to left by Kirk Nieuwenhuis off Barnstormers starter Jake McCasland.

It stayed that way until the fifth when a bloop RBI single to right-center by Michael Martinez tied the ballgame at two. However, an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Steve Lombardozzi in the bottom of the inning put the Ducks back ahead 3-2. Hector Sanchez scored on Ramon Cabrera’s double play ball in the sixth to increase the advantage to two.

Asher (2-0) earned the win, tossing five and two-thirds innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out two. McCasland (1-5) suffered the loss, yielding four runs on seven hits and two walks in five innings with four strikeouts. Josh Lueke picked up his first save of the year with a perfect ninth inning, striking out two.

Vladimir Frias led the Flock offensively with two hits and a run scored.
