(Central Islip, N.Y., May 26, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 9-5 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.
Sugar Land jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Ducks starter Jake Fisher on Chris Colabello’s RBI double and Juan Silverio’s two-run double in the first inning. Long Island closed to within two in the third on L.J. Mazzilli’s RBI groundout to shortstop off Skeeters starter Michael Mariot. However, a leadoff solo home run to right by Cody Stanley in the fourth pushed the lead back to three.
Three more runs for Sugar Land in the fifth extended their advantage to 7-1. RBI doubles by Jared Mitchell and Silverio, along with an RBI single by Jabari Henry, did the damage. A sac fly to center by Anthony Giansanti in the eighth made it an 8-1 game.
Long Island rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap to 8-5. A solo homer to right by Ramon Cabrera, a two-run homer to right by Matt den Dekker and an RBI single to left by Rando Moreno highlighted the inning. However, the Ducks could not inch closer.
Mariot (2-0) collected the win, tossing seven innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven. Fisher (2-3) suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings with two strikeouts.
den Dekker led the Flock with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Cabrera and Hector Sanchez each added two hits as well.
