Rutgers Is A Basketball School Again

Listen closely. For the moment put on hold what Greg Schiano accomplished for Rutgers in football. Rutgers is officially a basketball school, again

You know. Like 1976 when the team treked to Philly and the Final Four.

Or perhaps 1979, with that scintillating Holiday Festival win over Ohio State in triple overtime, with Sports Illustrated annointed no. 1 Duke in the field. Or that 1991 win over ranked UNLV and Jerry Tarkanian at the RAC.

Rutgers, now 5-1 had arguably its most important win of the 3-year Steve Pikiell era, with a 57-54 upset win over highly touted Miami on the road. Miami fell to 5-2.

Sophomore Geo Baker, with 16 points was the best player on the floor. Quinnipiac expatriate Peter Kiss added 12. Many of them from long range.

Rutgers led 28-24 at the half.

Rutgers played, per usual suffocating defense and limited Miami 3-point scoring to a minimum.

The Knights were 12 point underdogs and so much for Vegas underestimating the team from Jersey who could.

Is this an NCAA team? Probably not. But next season it could very well be, with New Jersey’s star pg Paul Mulcahy joining the fold.

Michigan State and Tom Izzo come to a sold out RAC tomorrow night and Rutgers fans can dream, can’t they?
The Spartans will be favored and Izzo will be prepared,as his team almost fell to Rutgers at home last season.

Don’t count Rutgers out of any Big Ten home game this season.

We know that Coach Pikiell and his staff won’t.
