Revolution Use Longball to Claim Series Opener

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 9, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the York Revolution 7-3 on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Taylor Ard’s sacrifice fly to center field off Revolution starter Mitch Atkins. A solo homer in the second inning by Telvin Nash off Ducks starter John Brownell tied the game at one, but the Ducks regained the lead in the bottom of the frame on Dan Lyons’ sac fly to center.

York took the lead for the first time with three runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 4-2. A two-run home run to left-center by Melky Mesa and an RBI single by Luis Cruz did the damage. Long Island closed to within one on Jordany Valdespin’s solo homer to right in the fifth.

However, the Revolution got the run back in the sixth on an RBI single by Jared Mitchell. Cruz’s two-run homer to left in the top of the ninth rounded out the scoring at 7-3.

Atkins (9-4) earned the win, tossing seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out seven. Brownell (8-9) took the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits and two walks over eight innings with four strikeouts. With his eight innings of work, he moved into second place on the Atlantic League’s all-time innings pitched list with 986.1, surpassing former Revolution pitcher Corey Thurman (980.1).

Valdespin and Cody Puckett each had two hits to lead the Flock.
