(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 4, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks shut out the Road Warriors 10-0 on Saturday night in the third game of a four-game series before a past-capacity crowd of 6,307 at Bethpage Ballpark. In the win, John Brownell recorded the 738th strikeout of his Ducks career, moving him into sole possession of first place on the Atlantic League’s all-time strikeouts list.
After Brownell stranded five men on base over the first two innings, David Washington gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead on an RBI single up the middle. One inning later, Jordany Valdespin launched a solo home run to right-center field, and Travis Snider clubbed a two-run homer to right, increasing the advantage to four.
It stayed that way until the sixth inning when an RBI single to right by Ramon Cabrera and a run-scoring fielder’s choice off the bat of Anthony Vega extended the Ducks lead to 6-0. Four more runs in the seventh rounded out the offense for the night. Cabrera’s two-run double to right and Vega’s RBI triple to right center did the damage.
Brownell (8-8) was superb on the mound to earn the win, tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out four. Road Warriors starter Raul Rivera-Alicea (3-11) suffered the loss, conceding six runs on nine hits and a walk over five and one-third innings with four strikeouts. Fernando Abad and Chris Pike each turned in a scoreless inning of relief for Long Island.
Cabrera led the Flock offensively with three hits and three RBIs. Snider chipped in with two hits, two RBIs and two runs.
