PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 3, 2017) – Christopher Gibson made 27 saves and Sebastian Aho scored the game’s only goal in the opening 10 minutes as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (4-5-0-0), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, earned a 1-0 win against the Providence Bruins (6-3-0-0) at Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Friday.
It was Gibson’s (2-3-0) fifth professional shutout and the third of his Sound Tigers career. For Aho, he now has two goals this season, both game-winning tallies.
BOX SCORE
The contest turned physical right off the bat as Ross Johnston and Sena Acolatse dropped the gloves following Acolatse’s hit against Aho at 2:41 of the first period. The two engaged twice during the same stoppage as tempers escalated even more when the linesmen attempted to separate the heavyweights.
Aho got his own revenge at 9:47 of the opening frame when the rookie defenseman beat goaltender Dan Vladar from the blue line. Following passes from John Stevens and Casey Bailey, Aho controlled the puck at the right point and floated a wrist shot on target that found its way through traffic and over Vladar’s blocker.
The Sound Tigers outshot the Bruins 15-11 in the second period and endured a relatively even third en route to their second road win this season. However, things got tense in the final 93 seconds as Providence pulled Vladar for the extra attacker, but couldn’t beat Gibson despite relentless pressure.
Bridgeport finished the game 0-for-6 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. The Sound Tigers also outshot the Bruins 32-27, while Vladar (1-1-0) made 31 saves in Providence’s loss.
