(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 3, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the New Britain Bees 8-7 on Sunday afternoon in the third game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.
New Britain took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Craig Maddox followed a fielding error with a two-out, two-run home run to left field off Ducks starter Matt Marsh. Long Island responded with three runs in the second off Bees starter Nate Roe to go in front. Angelo Songco’s leadoff solo homer to right and a two-out, two-run single by Jordan Hinshaw highlighted the inning.
The Bees took the lead back with a three-run fourth. Maddox and Jon Griffin scored on a pair of Ducks errors, and Conor Bierfeldt lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Griffin’s two-run homer to right-center in the sixth extended New Britain’s lead to 7-3.
The Ducks came back to tie the ballgame at seven with a four-run sixth inning. A sac fly to center by Elmer Reyes opened the scoring. Alex Burg then followed with a two-run double down the left field line and came around to score from second on a throwing error. Burg put the Flock on top for good in the eighth with a leadoff solo homer to right.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Marsh pitched three innings, allowing two unearned runs on just one hit while striking out six. Roe lasted four innings, surrendering three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Rob Rogers (5-1) collected the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning, working around a pair of hits to strand two runners on base. Brandon League (2-3) took the loss, yielding the game-winning run on two hits and a walk in one inning. Amalio Diaz earned his 15th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Burg led the offense with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Songco added two hits an RBI and two runs scored, while Lew Ford totaled three hits.
