Birthday Blast Sends Ducks Past Skeeters

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 21, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 4-3 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Sugar Land took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run to right-center field off Ducks starter John Brownell. Long Island bounced back with a three-spot in the fifth off Skeeters starter Brett Marshall to go in front 3-2. An RBI single by Giovanny Alfonzo and errors which scored Derrick Pyles and Alfonzo highlighted the scoring.

The Skeeters tied the game in the top of the eighth on an RBI single to right by Caleb Ramsey. However, Dan Lyons drilled a leadoff solo homer to left-center in the bottom of the frame to put the Ducks back on top for good.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell lasted five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four. Marshall pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Tyler Wilson (1-2) got the win after recording an inning-ending double play in the eighth to keep the game tied at three. Andrew Johnston (1-3) suffered the loss, surrendering Lyons’ game-winning blast in the eighth. Amalio Diaz earned his 12th save of the year with a perfect ninth, striking out two.

Lyons, Alfonzo and Pyles each had two hits to pace the Flock.
