Four-Run Fourth Lifts Flock To Sixth Straight Win

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 9, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 4-1 on Wednesday night in the finale of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

All of the game’s runs were scored in the third inning. Southern Maryland opened the scoring with a two-out RBI double by Cory Vaughn off Ducks starter Henderson Alvarez. Long Island responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame off Blue Crabs starter Gaby Hernandez. Delta Cleary Jr.’s two-run double, an RBI single by Marc Krauss and an RBI double by Alex Burg did the damage.

Alvarez (1-1) earned the victory, tossing five innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out two. He also stranded eight Blue Crabs runners on base. Hernandez (8-3) took the loss, surrendering four runs on seven hits and three walks in four and two-thirds innings with eight strikeouts. Amalio Diaz collected his eighth save with a perfect ninth, striking out one.

Cleary Jr. led the Flock with two hits and two RBI, while Dan Lyons chipped in with two hits as well. Diaz combined with John Lannan, Dennis O’Grady and Patrick Crider for four scoreless innings of relief, yielding just one hit while striking out three.

The Ducks hit the road on Thursday to begin a four-game series against the Blue Crabs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Right-hander Matt Larkins (5-6, 4.19) gets the start for the Ducks against Blue Crabs righty Daryl Thompson (6-6, 4.09).

Long Island returns home on Friday, August 18 to open up a three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Drawstring Bags, courtesy of Fairfield Properties. It’s also a Fowl Pole Friday, and if a select Ducks player hits a home run off one of the foul poles during the game, one lucky fan will win $50,000.
