(Central Islip, N.Y., July 4, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-3 on Tuesday night before a past-capacity crowd of 7,248, the largest crowd of the season at Bethpage Ballpark.
Long Island took advantage of three Barnstormers miscues in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. A throwing error by Lancaster starter Jarret Leverett and a fielding error by third baseman Garrett Weber did the damage. Another run in the third inning on Angelo Songco’s sacrifice fly to center field stretched the lead to three.
The Barnstormers closed to within one in the third inning on a solo home run to right by Caleb Gindl and an RBI single to left by Lastings Milledge off of Ducks starter John Brownell. However, Dan Lyons launched a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the frame, restoring the lead to three at 5-2.
Long Island blew the game open with a four-run fifth inning. Ruben Gotay’s three-run home run down the left field line and a run-scoring error off the bat of Delta Cleary Jr. highlighted the frame. Weber lifted a sac fly to right in the sixth to trim Lancaster’s deficit to 9-3, but Anderson De La Rosa flew out to leave the bases loaded.
Brownell (6-1) earned the win, tossing six innings of three-run ball, yielding five hits and three walks while striking out four. Leverett (4-4) suffered the loss, surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on 15 hits and a walk over four and one-third innings. Patrick Crider, Rob Rogers and David Aardsma combined to retire nine straight Barnstormers batters over the final three innings and struck out three.
Giovanny Alfonzo had four hits in four at bats to lead the Flock, and Fehlandt Lentini added three hits. Gotay finished with two hits, three RBI and two runs, while Lyons drove in two runs and scored twice.
