The Yankees ninth annual Hope (Helping Others Persevere & Excel) Week is underway, today honoring Victor and Nayyelyn Garcia, and The Icla da Silva Foundation. In 2015, Victor was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. “The Icla da Silva is the largest recruitment center for a match registry,” said Joe Girardi, who wore a foundation shirt which read Would You Marrow Me?
Last year, Victor and Nayyelyn were flown to New York, and the sister was a match for the bone marrow, and surgery was successful last August.
“Today they went to the Bronx Zoo with the foundation, and we will honor them tonight,” Girardi said.
The Yankees started Hope Week in 2009 and highlight an inspirational family or organization.
