On Sunday afternoon, the Pirates saw their 2016 BIG EAST Tournament Championship banner raised to the Prudential Center rafters before defeating CCSU 82-58.
In the victory, Junior Angel Delgado tallied his second-straight double-double, the 25th of his career, with 14 points and 16 boards. He was 6-for-8 from the field. Fellow junior, Khadeen Carrington tallied a game-high 18 points to go along with four assists and was 4-for-4 from behind the three-point line.
“It was an emotional (day),” Carrington said afterward. “It was nice to raise it, but it’s a new year now. We’ve just got to get back to the drawing board and try to do the same thing we did last year.”
The Pirates jumped out to a 17-2 lead and dominated the Blue Devils on the glass 16-1 early on. Holding CCSU to just 1-of-13 to begin the game, the Pirates took a 44-25 lead into the break and never trailed in the victory.
Sharp-shooting freshman Myles Powell tallied 13 points and was 5-of-10 from the field.
“He’s getting it,” Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said of the freshman, but then added, “He still has the jitters a little bit. … When he relaxes a little bit, he’ll start taking better shots.”
“I know that my teammates and me know that I’m more than just a shooter,” Powell said. “When people just run me off the (three-point) line, I can pump fake and get to the rim and I did that today.”
The Pirates have now jumped out to a 2-0 start for the sixth-straight season under Willard.
Up next, the Pirates travel to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes in a Gavitt Games matchup on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 9 p.m.
