Red Bulls Win In Rochester

The New York Red Bulls defeated the Rochester Rhinos, 1-0 on Wednesday night in Rochester to advance to the round of 16 in the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Sacha Kljestan got the game-winner on a penalty kick, while Luis Robles kept a fourth clean sheet in four consecutive competitive matches.
Kljestan put New York ahead by converting a penalty attempt in the 20th minute. Gonzalo Veron earned the PK, picking up a ball that was laid off by Bradley Wright-Phillips at midfield and charging down the left side. Veron used his speed to beat one defender before getting tripped up by a second inside the penalty area.
New York was able to fend off the Rhinos and take control in the second half with long spells of possession, limiting the Rhinos to five shots and just one shot on target.
Matchups for the round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup will be drawn tomorrow, June 16, at noon. MLS clubs entered the competition in the fourth round.
The Red Bulls return to MLS action this Sunday, June 19, with a home match against the Seattle Sounders. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
