15-year-old Catherine “Ci Ci” Bellis upset number 12 seed former Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova at the 2014 U.S. Open, becoming the youngest player to win a match at the U.S. Open since Anna Kournikova won at age 15 in 1996. Bellis was the youngest American to win a match at the U.S. Open since Mary Joe Fernandez in 1986. In the next round the newest US Open little darling lost a tough 3-setter to Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.
Later in the Jr. US Open much of the Open Buzz & Flushing Meadows heat & humidity were catching up with the # 1 junior seed Bellis as she experienced a disappointing 2nd round loss to 17-year-old Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva. Late in the day, Bellis bounced back teaming with Czech Republic partner Marketa Vondrousova to end the day with a doubles victory. Dave “Koz” Kozlowski caught up with Bellis at the Open.
