  • Villar? Almaro??

Villar was actually terrific in 2019 with power, speed, average .... 3rd base skills... Almaro is no real slouch as a 4th OF....

do their signings mean that something/s big is/are imminent?

their only real chips are Dom, JD and Nimmo... maybe Mauricio...

leads me to believe ---- pitching or a REAL CF.

    Speculations???

Lorenzo Cain is the only guy I can think of, and he isn't worth any one of those four..... unless they could get Hader too???

Cain was brought up by 86Mets a couple weeks ago. Personally, I pass. $35 mil over the next 2 season owed along with missing pretty much all of 2020 after a down 2019 year. Also turning 35 years old.

Only positive I have about Villar is that he can play all over the IF and has some speed. For me he's a bench/utility guy I want nowhere near starting anywhere on a long term basis.

I think we'll start to hear a little more rumbling on Bryant leading up to spring training.

Villar sounds like they couldn't get Marwin to agree to a 1 year / cheap deal. I think he would have been a far superior fit.

Villar is okay in that he's a much better fill in than Luis if we need someone for 20+ games. Has speed and pop, but a K machine. The downside is although he plays a bunch of positions he plays them all at a below average level

I don't think this is signs of anything other than the Mets being done spending and now filling in the cheapest options available for the bench. They needed a utility guy. They needed OF depth (still need OF depth IMO). They still need bullpen help as well. I'd expect another cheap domino to fall there in the next 48 - 72 hours

I'm guessing (read hoping) that these are depth moves. A FA CF signing looks logical, even though no one who is available will satisfy the fans. I'm not sure there's much in the trade market that would interest the Mets right now.

Yeah..this is all about adding depth..when one sees what mets have used as backup/callups over the years..this is par for the course in terms of additions..scraps and crumbs essentially left..its not a terrible skill set at the bench right now..thought they may have dabbled at an attempt for turner which coukd be a fit on ShORT term deal..but nonpoint point since mets woumd just be used forbhim to go back where he wants anyway(la) Still felt Cain has something left in tank...last season he played he still played GG defense in cf..and hit metrics said he hit in bad luck..andnonly two years..so short term risk ...but never confirmed by brewers he was even available..so nuff said on banging that drum..

One more sp (hope it's not arrieta) and perhaps a stash /st invite for bp will prolly be added out of crumbs...wouldnt mind Rosenthal or even wilson ..back... Greene perhaps and option too..out of all positions...perhaps the one that still has some appealing options out there.

On January 6, we reported that any talks between Mets and Cubs on Kris Bryant were no longer active. That was true at the time. TIL it has changed since. Unclear how likely it is to happen, but there is at least something there.

Read one place that they're asking for Alvarez and Mets are saying no.

As they should..Alvarez for a rental is rediculous..we didn't even have to give that for lindor and carrasco..

I would have an interest in bryant..but there is alot of risk..I'm not selling farm for him..can try for him at deadline if need still there.

A trade for Bryant could be fine, depending on what the Mets have to give up, but I'm still wondering about CF.

Honestly the concerns about CF to me are greatly overblown. I'd be far more concerned about the defense at 3B. Nimmo was bad in 2020, but not nearly as bad there in 2019 and 2018. In the end you're talking about a guy who looks to be a -5 DRS out there over 500+ innings. I get it, that looks bad when compared to a guy like Springer who is traditionally +6/7, but its not really horrific.

Davis meanwhile looks to be a -18 to 20 ish defensive 3B over 500 innings.... or a -15 DRS in LF. That's really unplayable

Agreed on Nimmo. Really not sure why so many posters think CF is still a big need. Yes, ideally Nimmo would be in LF but it's not like he's this huge liability if he has to play CF.

I dont think Nimmo is a butcher in CF but I do think he's better in LF. Plus, if Nimmo is in CF, who's in LF? Dom? I like Dom a lot but I'm not sure I like him in LF with Nimmo in CF.

If Smith and Nimmo are both .850+ OPS guys I'll deal with the potential early inning defense issues.

Dom has actually been pretty neutral defensively out in LF. In ~400 innings over the last 2 years he's been just a -1 runs saved. Yeah again ideally you'd like a plus defender there since CF is a bit of a negative too, but again neither are butchers out there. Smith's arm is actually a pretty good weapon in the OF and kinda wasted at 1B.
