  • WILPONS SELLING TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, we have to wait a few years. Yes, the Wilpons are not going away 100%. But their days as majority in control owners are NUMBERED. This may be one of the best days of my life.

I expected the classic joke; a different Wilpon selling a different team, but no; good news indeed. BUT, "The team confirmed that negotiations are ongoing and that Fred Wilpon will remain in the role of CEO for five years and Jeff Wilpon will remain as COO for the same amount of time." Also, Jeffy's not the beloved kid on the block: "The Post’s Joel Sherman reported that there’s long been talk Fred Wilpon’s brother-in-law Saul Katz wanted out of the Mets business and his children did not want to partner with Jeff Wilpon, which would have put a strain on any internal succession plan."

There a guy who does accounting for a bunch of professional athletes and he mentioned this morning that he heard rumors that the Mets were being sold. I didn’t post anything about it since he didn’t have anything other than rumors.

This 5 year plan makes no sense, but I guess it's Fred's last ditch stance to keep control until he dies and the only way he would agree to give up the team. Steve Cohen is a mega rich billionaire like richest people in the world kind of $$$$$. He wipes his ass with the Wilpons net-worth. He's also known for his drive to win at all costs. The show Billions is literally about him. Holy **** if this goes down we might have had our prayers answered.

        Thank you Saul Katz.

I read that he overpaid by a pretty fair margin just to get the deal done.

he wants to win, win now, and spend big to do it..... ASAP.

there weren’t even whispers two days ago, and now the deal is almost done.

          Cole? Strasburg? Betts? Hader? Lindor?

Brodie must be shitting a brick now that a true ruthless top dog is his boss instead of his rich brat pal talked into letting him play.
"There have been artists who have failed to capture dichotomy as beautifully as the Mets have in playing Wilmer Flores at shortstop and Juan Lagares in center field."

Who knows if he'll actually be a good owner, but I love the idea of Jeffy trying to enforce his role. I mean a guy who does this - "In 2015, he was the secret buyer of the world’s most expensive sculpture, Alberto Giacometti’s “Man Pointing,” for $141.3 million at Christie’s." is someone who could buy Jeffy's house and take a dump on the rug to prove a point.

Tack a hundred mill on that, and you’ve got Garrett Cole for 6-7 years.....

This was a straight up vanity purchase. He paid $2.6 billion for 80% of an asset worth $2.3 billion outright. No negotiation. Just a blank check that basically said, “I want to own your team before Cole and Strasburg sign”.

While I love this move more than ice cream, Im going to be a bit counter to everyone and say I DONT want a guy who is going to just throw money around and acquire players just for the sake of doing it. Just becuase you have lots of money, sometimes being close to the vest and NOT acquiring a player is the right move. Or passing on the YUGE free agent andd focusing on getting role players. Every year is different and it depends what the needs are. Plus....its not always about just getting players. Its about all the back end stuff. Spending money on player development, scouting and staff, spending money on the building and training facilities, spending money and investing in minor league teams located LESS than a three hour plane ride away. All that behind the scenes stuff is what makes a true winner, just just throwing a huge contract at a shiny free agent.

But all that type of stuff is for another day. For now...let us all revel in the fact that Jeffie's reign of terror is over.

One more thing...on the Katz stuff,....Those two families are VERY close. Those kids all grew up together, the Katz and Wilpons. Vacation together, spend holidays together, etc. And for Katz family to say "nah" to Jeff is VERY telling.

Take it as you will, but according to Forbes Magazine - He owns over 50% immediately and has stated that the Wilpons will not be calling the shots .... ALSO immediately.

The 80% total stake is upon completion of the negotiations.

It has to be approved by MLB first, though. I wouldnt exepct any changes this year. I think Winter of 2020-2021 is when things will happen.

Or he sees the potential value in the deal if he can put a winner back in NYC. The Yanks are valued at 4.6 billion, Dodgers 3.3 billion, Redsox 3.2 billion, cubs 3.1 billion, even SF is worth 3 billion and it's not like MLB teams aren't making money.

Kinda disagree actually.... It sounds like in a lot of ways Brody and Cohen are two peas in a pod. Brash, a little over the top, want the flash and best things.... Honestly Cohen owning the team going forward makes the Brody hire make a lot more sense. Never really understood how he matched up with the Wilpons/Omar other than the thought that Jeffy wanted someone "cool" to hang out with and he just blinded them with a "sales pitch". If Cohen was already making moves behind the scenes even then - would make a lot more sense to me.

In any case I'll believe it when I see in terms of pumping money into the team THIS year...but going foward this could be really interesting - they only have about 65 mil committed to next years team....could potentially be on a major shopping spree.

I’m envisioning Cole, Betts/Lindor, and Hader baseball cards in Mets uniforms under my Christmas tree.
