I’m sure 14 teams are happy to hear that. I’d rather he reveal that Vargas won’t be used in any inning after the national anthem.

Its not realistic to sign Kimbrel and the minors are going to offer no pitching help right now - Rhame, Bashlor, O'Rourke have all been terrible. Zamora you might be able to use to replace Avilan, but lets be honest its a minimal if any upgrade.

I thought in the Spring they should take a serious look at Matt Blackham and Steve Villines. Somehow despite both being on the older side they decided to put those guys in AA tho. Blackham has a Mariano-esque cutter that no one in the minors has been able to hit, a career 2.25 era with 220K's in 160 innings. A WHIP barely over 1 and a sub .200 BAA. They wouldn't be asking him to replace Familia (yet), but you cant tell me he wouldn't be a better option than Seaweed. He just turned 26 (missed over a year due to injury - 2016)...not sure what they are waiting for here......he's dominated every level. I'd be fast tracking him at this point.

Villines is Joe Smith 2.0 - side armer guy who is incorrectly billed as a righty specialist (like Smith was early on)...but he's another guy who's going to be 24 shortly, has done nothing but produce - career 2.55 ERA, 144 K's in 100 innings, .88 WHIP, .198 BAA. I can understand a little more why he's in AA - as he only threw 11 innings there last year and isnt far off the age curve, but again compared to the "talent" at AAA he should be getting a look at least there.

SP wise Flexen's career was destroyed when they rushed him up 2 years ago after 30 innings in AA. Oswalt has been on the Heath Bell/Heilman up and down train so much in the last 2 years that you're never going to get the best out of him. They have nothing in the minors to help which is why I really believe they need to be aggressive on Kuechel. It just makes sense if its a 1 year deal now. Kay and Peterson have promise in AA, but you're talking about 2 guys who have 130 innings TOTAL. They aren't going to be anywhere near MLB ready this season. Those are two you can talk about being #6/7 on the depth chart NEXT year.
