  • David Wright going to play one more game September 29th

He's not going to officially retire though, so the Mets can continue to commit insurance fraud for another 2 years.

Goodbye Captain. I bet Reyes plays SS that game.

There's no insurance fraud if the policy covers him in the event he is physically unable to play.

If Wright plays on September 29th, it will cost the team something like $220K above & beyond what the team already paid out this season (for the policy premium + the 60-day full salary deductible on the insurance policy + 25% of Wright's salary after the deductible).

I hope that he got a great buyout, otherwise he left a lottery jackpot on the tables

from MLB Trade Rumors Sept 13:

"Mets To Activate David Wright For Final Homestand; Wright Will Not Play Beyond 2018"

        https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/...etirement.html

"To be clear, it does not sound as though Wright will formally announce his retirement. Newsday's Tim Healey tweets that Wright, notably, did not use that word when describing his future, though he’s also been informed by doctors that his condition simply will not improve. Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that, indeed, Wright will not formally retire but will not return as a player during his contract. Wright is still signed through the 2020 season under the eight-year, $138MM extension he inked in Dec. 2012. He’s slated to earn $15MM in 2019 and $12MM in 2020 on that front-loaded deal, and if he’s declared medically unfit to play — as will be the case — he''ll continue to be paid out those sums."

good for him. The Mets need to treat this class guy with the same class he’’s personified throughout his career.

Depressing day, probably my favorite all time Met. It's a shame his body couldn't hold up. Will always be the epitome of class and dedication to a franchise that really didn't deserve him.

What is the reason that you continue to root for a team that 'really didn't deserve him [Wright]'?

habit, and if I don't root for the Mets I'd give up on baseball altogether.

There have been few better representatives of the sport, or on just how to be a good man than Wright. He's loved the team and the city non stop, and his determination to give everything he had to return was beyond admirable. That his body betrayed him will always be a shame, he's one of the teams greatest position players and his peak has him among the sports best 3rd basemen, I'm glad he's able to bow out in such a fashion.

                    https://nypost.com/2018/09/13/well-w...ut-the-person/

“I needed the games,” David Wright said Thursday afternoon at Citi Field, “for my body to finally tell me it’s not happening. It’s not working.”

So there will be one more game, on Sept. 29, against the Marlins, a Saturday night when Wright will take the field one last time, kick third base and hope for the best.

“I told Jake [deGrom], ‘I hope you’re not pitching,’ ” Wright said. “I’m sorry to whoever’s pitching. I’ll try my best out there.”
That last quote is a heart breaker.
"There have been artists who have failed to capture dichotomy as beautifully as the Mets have in playing Wilmer Flores at shortstop and Juan Lagares in center field."

This city .... and MLB as a whole .... were better for Don Mattingly and David Wright.

Two great NY Captains with Hall of Fame careers that ended way too soon.

Wright at least got to play in a World Series.

For what its worth, I don’t think Wright is worth breaking number retirement “traditions” though of non-HOFers though.

At least not with ample oppertunities for Gary Carter over the years and 8, along with 17 and 24 currently, is still just out of circulation.

For sure he’ll be in the Mets Hall, but if they’re going to retire numbers for non-baseball Hall of Famers, there is a decent sized list Wright would be in back of.

Now if someone can convince Reyes to do the same retirement announcement as well!

Agree. Hate to see his career end in this way.

It would be sinful if Wright didn’t have his number retired.

the Yankees retired Guidry, Mattingly and several others who couldn’t carry Wright’s jock.
