  • Keith Hernandez's VORP in 1988

    From Wiki:

Keith Hernandez (born October 20, 1953) is an American former Major League Baseball first baseman who played the majority of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets. A contact hitter with a .296 career average and a walk rate of 12.5%,[1][2] Hernandez's career hitting productivity was 31% above league average.[1] For his defensive work he received Gold Glove awards in eleven consecutive seasons, the most by any first baseman in baseball history.

It says there that Hernandez's career hitting productivity was 31% above league average. In modern parlance -- that would be a VORP of around 131 give or take, at least accounting for era. Obviously they didn't measure FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) back then but according to Bill James, he was a wizard with the glove and I believe given his size and comparative arm strength he would have made an excellent pitcher.

I personally give him an A- for his LIPS which are very soft and supple -- sabermetrically speaking, of course.

What do you think? I hope you don't disagree with me. I don't LIKE it when people disagree with me. And for that matter...you ape-like retards had better never insult me, either.

Should have started the Magadan era right then, and batted him leadoff!

Let’s grade Hernandez’s using the 1988 VORP as the base line. Provide the reason you gave him the rating you did with a series of graphs and pie charts ( boy I love pie)

My grade for Hernandez is sort of Mediocre/But then again good / but in the other hand not so good.

Mediocre because he's only slightly above average for the full season, we used as a base. According to BPAWAR rating. And good not so good because his period of consistently good performances has only been for about 1/3 of the season (minus two at bat per game on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s from April 11 - July 14 becsuse it’s an uneven arbitrary cross section and indicative of - a general pattern of a good AB, a poor AB, an ok AB, A not ok AB .... and the pie, boy do I like pie .)...and he has yet to demonstrate that he can maintain the kind of consistency he showed during his cardinal tests throughout an entire season.( excluding the 100 ABs he had on rainy weekdays, Tuesday’s and Jewish holidays) He did have a string of 12 of 13 high-quality ABs in 1989..but those are discounted as they are outliers.

His LIPS are beyond soft, almost lucious. But, according to mlblips.com, 24 different major leaguers had higher LIPs than Hernandez ( excluding the first 9 at bats of every third week.....outliers) I have to grade him numerically as 96.554309867433&@77;34!8.

        I’m guessing Keith’s LIPS were sponge-worthy.

BUT that was Season 4 Elaine. Keith’s performance should go up against the more weary and tired Elaine of Season 9, where she is constantly back sliding to David Puddy. Not in Season 4 where Keith is measuring up with the Joe Davolas of the world.

We’re talking about Game Winning RBIs right here, Keith’s clutchness would have been what was needed for Elaine in Season 9!
