[Baseball] breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.”
COME BY THE SCHOOL a year from now you"ll wish you started today

Along with Seaver and Willile Mays, Staub was one of my favorites growing up. Will never forget that 1985 extra inning game when Davey Johnson was forced to insert the now pinch hitting specialist into the lineup, but hide him defensively. Johnson had Rusty lumbering back and forth between LF and RF depending on the batter. Of course, the ball found Rusty on a bloop to RF, and he made a spectacular running catch to save the game.

And that '73 World Series; Staub, playing in pain with a separated shoulder, hitting .423 anyway. What a gamer.

RIP, La Grand Orange. We'll never forget you.

I was at the game in 1983 when Rusty collected his 8th consecutive pinch hit. Rick Reed, the pitcher who gave it up had them throw the ball to him, then walked over and gave the ball to Rusty, and tipped his cap. Rusty knew how highly regarded he was by his peers. He was special.

YEP. Went there many times. Also met him at a 9/11 fundraiser where he signed a baseball for me. Nice, very humble guy.
