Just wow....you have a guy in Brach who's era has been trending down and strikeouts have been trending up, every season since 2013....he's thrown 60, 79, 79 innings so you know he can handle a big workload. He's 30 years old and under control for another season after this. If this was legit, that's a huge drop of the ball by Sandy and Co.

If Brach was on the open market he'd be looking at something in the neighborhood of 3 year 24 mil deal...as he slots in better than a Mike Dunn (3/19) or Junichi Tazawa (2/12) and younger than a Ziegler (2/16). The Mets could have him for his arb value (estimated at 3 mil) + 5 mil and likely 5-7 mil in arb next year....so still less than he's worth.

They'd have a pretty lock down 7th, 8th, 9th with Brach, Reed, Familia.....all guys who can go 70+ innings in a season too...so very durable. If 5 mil is really what's holding up this team from having a potentially dominating pen when you have a staff who should give you 6 dominating innings EVERY NIGHT....that's horrible.

I don't jump right to the Wilpons on this....this might be a self-imposed Sandy thing, but whoever is responsible (again if true)...it's just pathetic.
This goes back to one of my biggest issues with Sandy, which I've seen mentioned in around the horn articles also, that Sandy seems to always want to "win" trades rather than accept one that is good for each team. Sure there are the odd ones like Cespedes for Fulmer (a goo win/win trade) but the things we've heard of that he's reportedly turned down do seem to support this viewpoint. It's good to avoid being suckered, but don't spite yourself holding out for a killer deal that may never come.

    • I totally believe and in fact took this as a GIVEN on why he wasn't moved earlier..and I personally still blame the CHEAPONS.. They are the one that give Sandy the budget..and it's not hard to see after committing to walker and Cess...the budget was gone..even though it was a WASH from the previous year combined..maybe Sandy..knowing he only has a few pennies to spend is trying save a little on side for a potential trade deadline deal..but constantly operating like a middle to small market team in NY..continues to irk the $hit out of me.

      • They give Sandy the budget, but Sandy always speaks about "flexibility." He's also the one that generally draws the line in the sand on how many year/$$ to offer players that the Wilpons then have to decide if they want to override (see Granderson).

So I think there's a valid argument that a move like this isn't constrained by a "hard cap" payroll, but instead a self imposed one by Sandy to leave him theoretical wiggle room to add salary at the trade deadline.

Say for argument he's got 7 mil left in the "hard cap budget" which was the rumors earlier after Cess had signed. I think he's looking to unload Bruce so he can have 15-20 mil left, knowing that he's probably going to have to spend 6-7 per on a lefty reliever and then that will still give him ~8 mil to be able to take on salary at the trade deadline. If he were to do the Baltimore deal he'd only have 3 mil to play with for the rest of the year.

I also think a lot of this could change once arbitration dates pass and they have firm knowledge of what some guys on the team are going to make.... but I'm betting this isn't 100% a Wilpon issue here. I think a lot of this has to do with Sandy. I also think there's a lot of truth to what Led is saying. I think that need to "win" does lessen during the season once Sandy knows the direction of the team as clearly moves for guys like Cess, Bruce, Kelly Johnson were done more in trying to help the team that worry about stealing away talent....but in the offseason he has shown a great reluctance to part with ANY talent.

I think honestly that helped this team a lot in the lean years, but now is the time to be pushing forward within reason. Look I like Conforto a lot and to me he's going to need to be a big part of this team's future if they are going to be able to keep any of these pitcher, but calling him untouchable is a little crazy.

        • A's add Casillas to pen 2yrs/11m He had a brutal year last year with 9 BS..but his K's and BB still went down.. but going two years?? I don't think so...A's stockpiling spare parts to move at deadline with couple of moves they have made recently..

Romo who I think could help still out there..but gotta maintain that "flexibilty" ...

          • Romo - meh. The guy is more of a specialist than anything else. Lefties hammer him. He's not a workhorse either....he's a 50 IP type of guy.. I'm not the biggest Robles fan in the world, but I don't think Romo would be much of an upgrade from Hansel.

If the Mets want to go that route, I'd rather go with Joe Smith. A year younger...you know you can get 60-70 inning out of him. Probably even comes cheaper.

            • Fair enough..he had closer exp. and with Reed as the primary setup guy, Romo as specialist perhaps not terrible.. saw a stat a little while ago on Hansel..his number when going >1 inn. were actually pretty good vs just<= 1 inning..suggesting he could be suited for longer role in pen.

Joe Smith I was all for bringing back..but then Mets signed that other submariner to minor league deal so figured they wouldn't go get a second one now even if he was better..

Would love to get Joe Smith back, but we HAVE to resign Salas. He was great for us down the stretch. Not flashy, but got the job done and was very composed. An asset for the 7th inning. Smith can be used against tough righties who can't hit his frisbee, and after Familia's suspension is up, you have 4 quality guys for the last 2-3 innings.

                  • Not totally shocked he's getting 2 years from Toronto specifically. I would be shocked if it was 40 mil (unless thats incentive driven) though....I had heard they weren't interested in exceeding the qualifying offer per year total which would put them right at 35 mil.

Toronto knows him best, he's a draw there....they can use him at 1B, RH, or DH...they have openings pretty much all over there even with Morales on board. They basically know what he's going to produce in their ballpark and their division.

                    • Brewers sign Feliz for 1/$5.35, as much as $6.875 with incentives. We couldn't match/beat that??

                        Trumbo back to O's 3/37.5

Sure got less than he expected..and with that..the last big bat FA off the board.. besides..Napoli who Rangers are close to geting apparently..

Bruce better prepare to be a Met...unless an unexpected injury occurs to somebody elswhere..

Holland still out there..NAts are looking at him apparently.

The Bruce trade was and is still awful for the Mets. I hated it at the time and still hate it. Was a massive miscalculation on Sandy's part.

                          • Surprised Trumbo got that much. Contradicts everything coming out of Baltimore in terms of $$ and years that they had available.

I'm glad the Mets passed on Feliz. He's a less durable Robles at this point. Mets need a lefty far more....and again with Joe Smith still out there, I'd still rather go that route if they want a vet righty for the pen.

Bruce trade isn't a disaster just yet....but it's certainly heading that way. The only thing saving the Mets now is that 1. Dilson hasn't done crap and 2. There's still options in the market.
