  • 2018 Draft

Less than a week to go.. was wondering what the thought were..

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...week-remaining

The dream would have been Bart as the future Stud C.. or Madrigal...but no way they drop that far now it seems..so most mocks I have seen have either India or Liberatore.. Either sound intriguing..although I admit I want Bats !

Love that he is touted as great on D and low K's..

I think unlike basketball or even football to an extent you NEVER draft for need in baseball. While you'll hear a lot of talk of BPA in those other sports, those rookies come in day 1 - position value and need get factored into that "BPA definition" there. In baseball I don't worry about hitter / pitcher / need...just get the best prospect available. Even the best of the best take a year or two to get to the MLs. Lots can change / go wrong. I know people are probably dying to look at Catcher or 3B for the Mets. Right now other than *maybe* SS and 2 OF spots I don't know that you can say anyone on the Mets roster now will be there 2-3 years from now....and the farm system with the possible exception of 1B doesn't have an significant "near mlb" talent...and very little positional depth overall.

I'm not big on India - it's not like I'm out there watching or scouting these guys, but I look to the Bronx for answers. Look at the size of the guys the Yankees bring up - Torres is a 6'2" 200+ middle infielder. Andujar is 6'0, but 220. Bird 6'4" 230. Sanchez 6'2" 230. Judge of course is a monster.

I like Rosario, but stand him behind Torres and he'd be invisible. Conforto compared to Judge/Bird/Sanchez same deal. Nimmo still has the chance to fill out more, but again there's a 6'3" guy who clocks in around 200 pounds.

Is India going to add 30-40 pounds by the time he hits the majors to compare to Andujar? Tend to doubt it. No saying size in the end all be all, but its something I'm looking for in a first round pick watching all these giants walk onto the field and murder the ball in the Bronx.

I like the Rodriguez kid - throws 100. 6'5" 230 already. Kelenic is 6'2" 200 already in high school as a 5 tool OFer. The high schooler 3B Gorman is already 6'1 215 with elite power.

Agreed with pretty much all of this. BPA is the way to go and big dudes tend to be the better players. There are very few dominant 6 foot and under guys in the ML's, especially over the long term.

Bart is the guy that fits a need at the top of the draft but catchers are such a crap shoot I wouldn't look to draft one early.

Agreed on India. The guy is already in his 20's so adding that much muscle is going to be tough at this point. I'd question his power potential as a 3B.

My preference is to add one of the top arms, especially if dealing deGrom or Syndergaard is something that's being considered. It's a lot easier to deal for good hitting in the minors then good pitching.

Ok..never looked at it from size attribute..but wont totally disagree..and Absolutely..total agreement that BPA mantra is the way to go in Baseball..I just thought this year..it could be the best of both worlds in terms of players available and projected slot..Brohm certainly fits the criteria of BIG..lol..but doubt he lasts..and also predicted to be moved to 1b..

Mayo says India to Reds..and Brohm dropping to Mets..

        https://www.mlb.com/news/mock-draft-...nd/c-279050910

And appaently Keth Law has Mets CHOOSING India over Brohm withboth being there..

Problem I've seen, and I really don't read much on the draft, is that most predict he'll need to move to 1B. With the way Alonso is playing and he couldn't stay at 3B it would be more of a luxury pick.

While I get the point, Alonso isn't in AAA....isn't in the majors....and honestly even as a person who pretty much called this breakout season last year - but at this point (tho improving) he looks more like a DH. I like the kid...I think he's going to mash even at the majors. I think he will solve 1B for the Mets for the next 5-7 years once he gets his shot because of his bat and if they could make Duda into some form of 1B they can probably live with Alonso's short comings....BUT if Brohm is there and the BPA I'm taking him and worrying about the position later.

If Alonso does pan out and Brohm is a beast - you cash one in to fill another need in the future.

And who knows on half these scouting reports - every report in the world had Conforto as a below average LFer - even thru his minor league days....yet once in the MLs he's proven to be an average, if not slightly above average in all 3 OF positions.

Some peeps thoughts trickling in that Kelenic could be target.. looks like Conforto/Nimmo esque..LH doesnt pass your BIG GUY stature test either although he is only HS prep..nice looking swing..and like the fact he as played up apparently in his brief career and excelled..but would rather they aim higher..not that I know anything about these guys..

6'2" 200 pounds as a high schooler is a pretty big kid.....when you've got 4-5 years to grow into a frame you should be talking about the ability to add 20-30 pounds. He's a project, but 5 tool kid. My annoyance is more when we draft this college kids that as 21-22 year olds are still 6'0 190 pounds....those are the guys you expect to make the MLs in ~2 years. High schoolers got a MIN of 3 years...but usually more like 4-5.

Same deal when it comes to LA....I don't have an issue signing 5'10 16 year old MIFs....they'll change a lot.

One of my favorite comps I got in this Draft was when a scout compared Kelenic to a more athletic Mark Kotsay.
                    I AM PUMPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah he's a Nats fan BTW. LOL hell of a pick Plandy

Most mocks I saw this guy was consistently out of the top 10. Sounds like an pre-draft under-slot deal bullshit. The Wilpons will sleep well tonight knowing they saved some shekels.

Under slot deal isn’t the worst thing in MLB draft. There’s a pool of money so if you pay first rounder less than slot it allows you to go over slot down the road on a player who falls.

i would have preferred Singer but they seem to think this kid is the best pure hitting in HS. Downside is that much like Nimko he has limited HS time, though has played well at travel, and some question his power potential and ability to stay in CF. Scouts say he loves the game and he should sign rather than go to college from what I saw.

Thought thefy would have gone liberatore once India was gone.. But cross fingers and pray for the best.. May end up in RF. But has a strong enough arm for it apparently if need be.. Maybe he can be a Yelich type. .

When you're picking so high in the draft i don't give a **** about draft money later on. GIVE ME TALENT. Talent that is equivalent to picking 6th in the draft. So great we drafted the next Brandon Nimmo, so I guess 7 years from now he will actually start to contribute at the ML level? Sweet 2025 is gonna be lit.

They need to blow it up if they’re drafting for 5 years from now.
Plandy Balderschlong is a douchebag who was once escorted out of a petting zoo for engaging in assplay with pygmy goats.

yeh, they shoulda drafted a college kid, so he could make it to the bigs in less than a year and hit .232
