The 2009 edition of the New York Red Bulls have played eight league games and have five goals to show for it. None of those goals have come on the road, where they haven’t won since the Gowanus Canal was clean. They’ve given up two sure victories at the death.
Yet a win Friday against the […]
At least the New York Red Bulls are finding creative ways to lose. Tonight at Home Depot Center it was a 1-0 decision that did the trick against the L.A. Galaxy. A generous first half penalty call proved the difference in a rather dull match. Adam Rozsa has the player ratings.
The New York Red Bulls have become a rather exotic bunch since Juan Carlos Osorio took over the coaching reins, with almost as many Latin American players as U.S. ones on the roster. But Wednesday night, it was two good ol’ boys from New York who did the team’s heavy lifting. Suffolk County native Mike Petke and Staten Island’s John Wolyniec book-ended the match with goals to beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 and get the team to the U.S. Open Cup, where they will face archrival D.C. United.
Head coach Juan Carlos Osorio is concerned over the health of the team’s star striker Juan Pablo Angel, who was removed early from Saturday’s game against Real Salt Lake. At issue appears to be a lingering hamstring injury that is not helped by the field turf at Giants Stadium.
It was a night of firsts for the New York Red Bulls. First goal (scored by Macoumba Kandji), first victory, first post-suspension appearance by Jon Conway, first MLS start for Alfredo Pacheco. Most importantly, the first time for its fans to feel confident about the 2009 campaign.
One cannot help but question the wisdom of using the Mark McGwire defense, especially when the issue is performance enhancing drugs. Yet that’s exactly what Jon Conway did at Red Bulls media day Monday, repeating almost to a word the disgraced slugger’s words from his fateful 2005 Congressional hearing.
