McDonald: The Jets Hiring Of Adam Gase Now Looks Like A Mistake

No one is arguing that the Jets had a rough time this season. First they has to endure a tough first half schedule and for many of those games, San Darnold was sidelined with Mono.

But Darnold is back and now the scheduled is lightened up.

So now, what is the Jets excuse?

It looked more and more like hiring Adam Gase was a mistake. He doesn’t seem to have a grasp on this team and if getting outcoached in every game. And Darnold has taken a few steps back under his watch. It’s not good.

To make matters worse, the Jets couldn’t beat the Dolphins yesterday, a team that is not even trying to hide the fact that it’s tanking. The final score of 26-18 is closer than the game even looks, which is why you really have to wonder what is Gase looking to do here.

And he’s not even embarrassed about the putrid outcome. ““This is the NFL,” he said. “You can’t be embarrassed by this s–t.”

Look, its going to be tough getting rid of Gase now. Todd Bowles is still under contract and the Johnson Brothers don’t want to pay two coaches not to coach for them. But more and more this is looking like the biggest Jet mis-hiring since Rich Kotite.

Gase is supposed to be a teacher out there and a quarterback whisperer, but Darnold looks lost. Sure the offensive line is terrible, but you have to think a team with Darnold and Le’Veon Bell on it should be able to move the ball a little.

No. Not here. Not under Gase.

“We’re 1-7. Everybody — you feel like crap,” Gase said. “You don’t put in all this time and effort to come out here and lose. We’ve got to get things fixed. That’s what they know. That’s what I told them. That what other guys in the locker room are saying the same thing.”

After eight games, Gase probably hasn’t lost the locker room, but this could spiral out of control real quick. They have the Giants this week and another with the Fish. The Redskins and Raiders are also on the list. Before the season you thought of those games as gimmes. Now, not so much. Heck these are gimmes for the other team.

But it doesn’t matter anymore. This season is lost. The only question is how much damage the Gase hiring as done to this franchise. Even if the Jets bite the bullet and fire Gase at the end of the year, Darnold will then be on his third offense in three years. Even if you bring back Weeb Eubank, it’s going to be tough for the franchise quarterback.

It’s just another day in the office in Jetland.

No wonder why it’s been over 50 years since the last championship.
