BINGHAMTON – The Binghamton Devils were defeated by the visiting Syracuse Crunch for the third time this season, this time 4-1, at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Wednesday night.
Blake Pietila scored shorthanded just 3:33 into the game to give the Devils a 1-0 lead against the league’s top-ranked power-play unit. Brandon Gignac stole the puck and fed Pietila on a two-on-one rush who lifted a shot with his back hand over the left shoulder of goaltender Connor Ingram. The goal was Pietila’s fifth of the season and second shorthanded and the Devils took the one-goal lead into the intermission.
Syracuse scored three goals in the second period to take a two-goal lead. Carter Verhaeghe put home a great pass by Cory Conachar on the power play to tie the game with his sixth of the year at 9:41 with Alex Barre-Boulet recording the second assist.
Off an offensive zone faceoff, Boris Katchouk ripped a shot by goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to give Syracuse a 2-1 lead. The goal came just 0:57 after Verhaeghe’s goal with the lone assist going to Gabriel Dumont on Katchouk’s second of the season.
After the Devils were put down two skaters for the third game in a row, Andy Andreoff tapped in a Conachar pass for a two-goal advantage with 2:37 left in the second period. Syracuse took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission, along with a 19-17 shot advantage.
Conachar added an empty-net goal in the third period for the 4-1 win.
