NYCFC Medina Alcaltel MLS Player Of Week

New York City FC forward Jesús Medina was voted the Alcatel Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 20 of the 2018 MLS season.

NYCFC defeated Montreal Impact 3-0 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, with the young Paraguayan netting a goal and adding an assist to lift the club over the Impact. Medina broke the deadlock again on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium when NYCFC defeated Columbus Crew SC 2-0, bringing the 21-year-old’s season total to four goals and seven assists tallied.

The Boys in Blue now sit in second place in the Eastern Conference with 40 points (12-4-4 overall record) and maintains an undefeated 10-0-1 home record in the Bronx.

Medina opened the scoring in the 60th minute when he patiently made his way past two defenders and fired a shot from outside the box right into the center of the goal (Watch Goal). Moments later, Medina found Ronald Matarrita’s for the Costa Rican’s goal in the 65th-minute to push NYCFC’s lead to 2-0 (Watch Assist).

The 21-year-old continued his scoring ways on Saturday for City’s third game in seven days, giving the home team a late lead against Columbus. Medina capitalized on a Columbus defensive mistake when he received a ball in the box from teammate Jonathan Lewis and finished precisely with a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the goal to put the team up 1-0 in the 80th minute (Watch Goal).

New York City FC returns to action on Thursday, July 26 to face Orlando City SC at Orlando City Stadium (8 p.m. ET, ESPN / WatchESPN / ESPN Deportes / TSN 2).

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men’s soccer in the United States and Canada.
