The next few months are set to see some very exciting events happen in New York sports. Some seasons are ready to get underway while others will be reaching their conclusions. There are also some big one off events that are going to be well worth watching. New York is a real centre of sport in both the world and the United States, and these events may well bring the world’s media to the Big Apple.
The NHL is bubbling nicely and the Islanders have an outside shot of a wild card spot. Both the Nets and the Knicks will need something special to make the playoffs, but stranger things have happened. While other leagues will be starting soon, allowing soccer and baseball fans to get their fill. For a city the size of New York, it has been too long since there has been a team that dominates from the city. Everyone is hoping 2018 will change that, that 2018 will be the year that we see teams that have shown promise, fulfill that promise.
With that in mind, we thought it would make sense to explore some of the events that should be in your calendar. Some dates that you need to remember, moments that could well be very important, the start of something big. New York expects, hopefully these events can deliver.
Sergey Kovalev vs. Igor Mikhalkin (13th March, Madison Square Garden)
Last year, was not a great one for boxing, as much of the boxing world was distracted by the farce of a fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. However this year looks like it could well be a much better one for the sport. Golovkin is set to take on Saul Alvarez, Joshua v Parker is likely to be a special matchup for the heavyweight division and here in New York, Kovalev vs Mikhalin will be a superb watch. Kovalev will be defending his light heavyweight title and will be favourite, but Mikhalkin is on a ten fight winning streak, expect fireworks.
New York City FC’s first home match vs LA Galaxy (11th March)
NYCFC have always been a bit of a so close yet so far kind of team. They did well to make the playoffs last season but still don’t quite look like a team that can win the cup. However with some clever offseason signings including Ebenezer Ofori from Stuttgart, they look better than ever and fans will be hoping for a special season. A good start at home is essential when they take on LA Galaxy at Yankee Stadium.
The Mets start all over again vs the Cardinals (29th March)
As with NYCFC, Mets fans will be hoping their side can finally fulfill their undoubted potential with a championship. It’s been too long since the Mets have managed to go deep into the playoffs with so many near misses. With a strong pitching lineup and the drive of a new season, the Mets will be hoping to start well and pick up some momentum. It will be great to see how they get on.
