McDonald: The Giants Need To Sign Victor Cruz

It wasn’t the fact the Giants went 0-5 after yesterday’s loss and it wasn’t the fact they lost to a LA Chargers team that dropped nine in a row and has their current city not caring about them and former city infuriated at them.

It’s the fact the Giants in the 27-22 loss yesterday lost four wide receivers.

You wonder what the odds for the next Giants game of that happening again.

More important, with the loss of Odell Beckham, Jr., Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard, and Dwayne Harris to injury, they need some wide receivers.

Both Beckham and Harris look like they are going to be out for the season, while Marshall and Shepard will miss a few weeks.

So what do the Giants do?

They did sign Travis Rudolph off the practice squad, but that won’t be the answer. So maybe the club should look to bringing Victor Cruz back in.

Cruz has been out of football since being cut by the Bears in training camp. But he knows the Giants. He knows the offense and he knows Eli Manning. And just for that they should give him a look to see if he has anything left.

Even though they are 0-5, the Giants still have to play another 11 games this year. Although looking at the schedule it was going to be ugly even with healthy receivers, it’s going to be almost impossible to even get a couple of wins this year with the wide receiver devastation.

“It significantly altered the game,” said coach Ben McAdoo. “We had one receiver left at the end of the ball game. The guys fought hard, the tight ends stepped up and went out and worked to execute the two-man offense. They don’t get a lot of reps with what they’re being asked to do, but they went out, they played fast and played hard.”

Even with tight end sets and running screens, the Giants still need some veteran wide receivers to help out. Both Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens tweeted they’re available, but knowing the Giants they will look to their guys first.

Cruz should be it.

Now, no one is a savior and the Giants will probably be pretty bad no matter who they bring in, but they still have to make it interesting.

If this season is the going to be a loss for Jerry Reese and McAdoo, who may pay for it with their jobs, then they have to keep the team playing hard for the next two and a half months.

With only so much they can do, the Giants need to look to Cruz and then work their way back from there.
