McDonald: The Mets Need To Make Shortstop Rosie To Save The Season

To quote The Boss Bruce Springsteen: “Rosie, come out tonight!”

It’s time for a change in queens and it’s time to start the next great era at shortstop.

Asdrubal Cabrera is showing his age and the 31 year-old shortstop just doesn’t seem to have it anymore at the position.

The range just isn’t there and there are more and more throwing errors coming from the Mets starting shortstop. Tonight, for example, Cabrera had a throwing error in the seventh inning, which could have done a lot of damage. Thankfully it didn’t.

But that’s no excuse. With other areas of the club, like the bullpen, the Mets can be excused. They have no one else, but here there is a very simple solution. Bring the Mets top prospect Amed Rosario up to the majors and have him start at shortstop.

The Mets pitching needs all the help it can get. If they don’t have the staff to make the right pitches, then you need someone in the field who can cover ground. Both Cabrera and Jose Reyes don’t have the same range anymore. Rosario is the guy for the Mets.

And it’s perfect for this club right now, because the team is hitting. This will allow Terry Collins to ease Rosario into the lineup, batting him lower in the order and then moving him up later on.

Look, it worked for Michael Conforto and should work for Rosario.

With Rosario in the lineup, the Mets can play the hot hand at third, be it Wilmer Flores, Cabrera, or Reyes, until the trade deadline, where general manager Sandy Alderson can see if he can move Cabrera in a deal. Maybe he can, but more than likely he can’t and you decline his option and let him walk at the end of the season.

With the Mets 24-30 at the 54-game mark, they need some help if they are going to turn this around. Both Seth Lugo and Steven Matz look like they will be coming back later this week and maybe Yoenis Cespedes will follow soon afterward.

It’s time for Rosario as well. The Super-2 time is pretty much over. Rosario is hitting .352 in Triple-A. There’s nothing else to prove.

The Mets can very well take advantage of a weak schedule in the National League and can go on a streak, but they need to play sharp defense, as well.

Bring Amed Rosario up Sandy and begin the next era in great Mets shortstops.

It’s the best chance to save the season.
