After today’s upset of No. 1 seed of Andy Murray by Germany’s Mischa Zverev, the top two seeds of Murray and Novak Djokovic are out of the Australian Open.
And the other two of the Big Four, Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal are still alive and well, even with their lower seeds and recent injury history.
It’s surprising to everyone, including the Maestro himself.
“It all depends on the draw, as well. I mean, I felt like if Rafa and myself can be healthy, yes, you can expect that. That Novak and Andy are not, that is a big surprise,” Federer said after ousting Kei Nishikori, 6-7(4) 6-4 6-1 4-6 6-3. “I never thought that Mischa Zverev and Denis Istomin would beat those two big guys.
“I guess it’s good for tennis, you know, that a lot of guys believe stronger now that the top guys are beatable, are vulnerable, especially on a faster court. It happened completely in different circumstances.”
“But two huge surprises. No doubt about that.”
Of course No. 3 seed Milos Raonic and No. 4 Stan Wawrinka are still in the draw, so before you get ready for a Federer vs. Nadal Final, plenty of things have to happen.
But in the second week, the dream matchup between those two war horses.
