Leander Paes and Martina Hingis won singles and doubles, leading the five-time defending Mylan World TeamTennis presented by GEICO champion Washington Kastles to a 22-15 season-opening victory over the New York Empire presented by Citi at Forest Hills Stadium at The West Side Tennis Club tonight. It marked the inaugural match for the Empire in WTT play.
Washington started off the match by rallying to win men’s doubles, as Denis Kudla and Paes topped Neal Skupski and Guido Pella, 5-4. Hingis and Rodionova then upended Christina McHale and Maria Irogyen, 5-2 for a 10-6 match advantage. Pella narrowed the Empire deficit with a 5-2 men’s singles triumph over Kudla before Hingis and Paes ground out a 5-2 mixed doubles win for a 17-13 advantage heading into the final event, women’s singles. Madison Brengle then finished off the Kastles victory with a 5-2 win over McHale.
The Empire return home on Monday for a 7 p.m. matchup with Caroline Wozniacki and the Philadelphia Freedoms at Forest Hills Stadium. Washington hosts the Springfield Lasers on Monday at 7 p.m.
