The New York Jets announced today that Steve Mileti of West Islip High School has been named this week’s recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award presented by Chase. Through Chase’s partnership, the monetary award to benefit the school’s football program has doubled to $2,000. Coach Mileti will be presented with a certificate and award ball. In addition, he is invited to watch the New York Jets vs. Tennessee Titans on December 13th in Chase’s suite.
In its 20th year, the Coach of the Week award is given to a coach in the Tri-State area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
Coach Mileti is a 1992 alumnus of West Islip High School. The former team captain and two-time all-league linebacker is in his in his seventh season as head coach of the Lions and 20th overall with the program. Coach Mileti led the Lions to a division championship in 2012. They were Suffolk County Finalist in 2005, ’07 and ’08 during his time on the staff.
In addition to his high school coaching duties, Mileti is a USA Football certified coach instructing players on the proper techniques of the game on the youth level. He is in his 11th year of teaching physical education at West Islip High School.
On Saturday, West Islip upset the Riverhead Blue Waves 19-8, the #2 preseason seed in the Suffolk Division II, after completing the 2014 season with a 1-7 record. The Lions’ next game will be at home against the West Babylon Eagles on Saturday, September 19th at 2 P.M.
