New York Red Bulls defender Chris Duvall underwent successful surgery this morning to repair a broken Tibia, the club announced today. The injury was suffered in Wednesday night’s 4-1 win over the New York Cosmos in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Duvall is expected to miss 3-4 months.

Red Bulls Head Coach Jesse Marsch said, “The main thing is that, right now, your heart is with Chris, because it was a hard injury. It’s a devastating blow for him, and it’s his first real big injury of his career. But I think it’s been made clear to him that this is not anything that’s going to endanger his future, and it’s just a matter of now it’s going to take some time to heal, but that he’ll come back and be stronger than ever.”

The injury occurred on Wednesday night in the 83rd minute, as the Cosmos’ Hunter Gorskie and Duvall were going for a ball, and Duvall took the worst of it, as he would up being taken off the field on a stretcher.

Marsch said of Duvall’s status after the game, “We are all hopeful that Chris isn’t as bad as it looked. He has been a very important guy and hopefully it is just a bad contusion.”

Marsch said of the play, “I think they both went in hard but I think that Chris wend in sideways and I think Gorskie went in more with his studs up. I think it should have been a red card I don’t know what the ref was looking at frankly. Again, that is endangering an opponent, that is the definition of endangering an opponent.”

Duvall has been a regular on the Red Bulls back line since being drafted in the second round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft out of Wake Forest. The Duluth, Georgia, native made 19 appearances as a rookie, including 18 starts, and recorded one assist. Duvall appeared in 15 of New York’s 16 league games so far in 2015, and scored his first professional goal, the game-winner, in the 3-1 victory over New York City FC on Sunday.
