MANCHESTER, NH – Albert Cordero launched a tiebreaking homer in the seventh to lead the Binghamton Mets to a 5-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Monday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Brock Peterson drove in three with a three-hit game and Gabriel Ynoa allowed just four hits to pick up the win. Dario Alvarez and Paul Sewald closed a spotless road trip for the bullpen by retiring all seven batters they faced to help Binghamton avoid the sweep.
The Fisher Cats went station-to-station to grab the lead in the third against Gabriel Ynoa. Shane Opitz led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice bunt, grabbed third on a single and scored when Jon Berti legged out a potential inning-ending double play. KC Hobson stroked a two-out RBI single to center, doubling New Hampshire’s lead.
Binghamton struck right back with two scores in the fourth. After Michael Conforto registered his fourth multiple-hit game of the road trip with a double to left, Brock Peterson pelted the left-field wall with an RBI two-bagger. Jared King tied the game three batters later with a line-drive single to right.
The B-Mets got power from an unlikely source to grab the lead in the seventh. Cordero deposited Lawrence’s 2-1 pitch over the right-field wall for his career Double-A home run, giving the B-Mets a 3-2 lead.
Ynoa settled down after Hobson’s single and put down the next ten Fisher Cats he faced, cruising through three perfect innings. Matt Newman ended his run with a leadoff double in the seventh. Ynoa collected two outs before walking Jorge Flores, prompting Pedro Lopez to call the bullpen.
Dario Alvarez inherited two runners from Ynoa, including the tying run on third, and induced Andy Fermin to bounce out to the mound. The lefty blazed through a perfect eighth, striking out the heart of the Fisher Cats’ lineup.
In the ninth, Peterson struck again, tattooing a first-pitch double into the left-field corner against reliever Chad Girodo. Peterson’s hit, his third of the night, plated Cordero and Gavin Cecchini and kicked Binghamton’s lead to three.
Paul Sewald struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn his 12th save of the season.
Ynoa (4-4) allowed two runs on four hits over 6-2/3 innings to collect his second win in as many starts. Lawrence (5-8) was touched for three runs over 6-2/3 innings in the defeat.
The B-Mets (36-32) open a four-game series against the Harrisburg Senators at NYSEG Stadium on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Luis Cessa takes the hill against LHP Matthew Spann. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
