Lasers Outpoint Sportimes in World TeamTennis, 23-12

Rik De Voest and Martin Damm each won two events, leading the Springfield Lasers to a 23-12 victory over the host New York Sportimes in World TeamTennis action at Sportime on Randall’s Island on Monday.

De Voest and Damm teamed to defeat Robert Kendrick and Jesse Witten, 5-3, before the Sportimes’ women’s doubles tandem of Ashley Harkleroad and Abigail Spears evened the match with a 5-3 triumph over Carly Gullickson and Chanelle Scheepers.

The Lasers (3-3) then won the next three events, with De Voest defeating Kendrick in men’s singles, Scheepers topping Spears in women’s singles and Damm and Gullickson teaming to down Kendrick and Spears in mixed doubles.  The singles loss was the first of the year for Spears, who had won her first six in the WTT season.

The loss drops the Sportimes (5-2) a half-game behind the Washington Kastles in the WTT Eastern Division at the midway point of the season, pending Washington’s late result Monday.

The Sportimes travel to Albany tomorrow to take on the New York Buzz, then host Philadelphia (with Andy Roddick vs. the Sportimes’ John McEnroe) on Wednesday and the showdown vs. Washington on Thursday on Randall’s Island.
