NYSD’s Top 10 New York Sports Moments of the Decade

#3) 2008: The Closing of Yankee & Shea Stadiums

The most famous stadium in all of sports, and the stadium that many never liked (though I personally loved it), but which also provided some great memories, each sadly closed in the name of money, in 2008. It’s just the way in every major sport these days. The Giants and Jets will be moving into the new Meadowlands after closing Giants stadium this season, and almost all pro teams, if they haven’t already, always look to upgrade their facilities now. The new Yankee Stadium and Citi Field are both beautiful ballparks, but there was only one House That Ruth Built with so many great Yankee memories. And, there was only one Shea, which despite not being a baseball only building with many seats far from the playing surface, had a nice charm all its own, including the unforgettable Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, which remains not only one of the great Met and baseball moments, but one of the best events in sports history. After 85 historic years in the Bronx and 44 eventful years in Flushing, respectively, the lovable old stadiums were closed down for good, forever to be missed by the true diehard Yankee and Met fans.
