Default Champions League Headed to FSC

Fox wins U.S. TV rights to Champions League - U.S. Soccer - ESPN Soccernet

Can't believe they outbid the mighty ESPN! Now they REALLY need an HD channel...

Cool -- here's hoping they keep UEFA Cup coverage as well. Although, FSC announcers are preeeetty terrible. Maybe Tommy Smith will jump over.

FSC needs a upgrade then if they are going to cover the CL. That is huge. There's no way they can keep both the CL and the UEFA Cup IMO. ESPN will grab SOMETHING for soccer

Well the UEFA and CL draws aren't played on the same days, so I don't see it being a huge issue. I wouldn't be upset if they dropped the Argentinian soccer or Serie A (who wants to see Italian guys flopping around like fish) though.

Doesn't matter about the days. ESPN has to replace the CL with something else for soccer. Watch them go hard for the UEFA Cup

Is their a catch to FSC's UEFA cup coverage? Maybe I'm missing something, but they seem to only cover home EPL games before the final. ESPN was heavily rumoured to be going after the EPL, and it's hard to imagine they couldn't get it if they really wanted it. Maybe this is FSC's preemptive strike?

They do need a huge upgrade though, HD and coverage wise. Hard to imagine anyone being taken seriously without an HD channel these days. Let's see if all the ESPN guys do like Madden and Michaels and jump ship to FSC now. I actually like the Soccernet guys, and it would be nice to see that kind of show more than a half hour a week on ESPN Classic and online....

FSC needs to do the following:

Improve viewership - 34 million nationwide have FSC compared to 98 million who have the ESPN networks. That is unacceptable for CL

HD - cannot get stressed enough

Coverage - They have SOME noteworthy guys, but they need an improvement.

This is a shocking move by FSC. Now they need to go further.

It is pretty risky. Let's hope it doesn't blow up in their faces and ruin one of the best things that's ever happened to Soccer in America...

Looks like they're at least heading in the right direction....

FOX Sports on MSN - Champions League - Fox plans expanded Champions League TV coverage

Quote:
Fox plans expanded coverage of the European Champions League next season, with matches appearing on Fox Sports Net and FX in addition to the Fox Soccer Channel.

After beating out ESPN for rights to the world's most-followed club competition, Fox will broadcast 31 live and 79 delayed matches on FSC next season. Sixteen games will air on Fox Sports Net on Tuesdays, and the final from Madrid on May 22, 2010, will be on FX as the Union of European Football Association switches the championship to Saturday from its traditional Wednesday.

In addition, Fox Sports en Espanol will broadcast 31 matches live and 63 on delay.

ESPN and ESPN2, which have televised the Champions League since the 1994-95 season, are available in 98 million homes and have broadcast Champions League matches in high-definition this season. FSC, which reaches 34 million households, plans to launch HD telecasts at the end of this year.

That's a good start. Hopefully, MSG Plus will show the games since there's no FSN in NYC. They need to show a little more live games especially since about 80 will be delayed.
