I wasn't following the contract negotiations that closely, was there ever any doubt? I mean I know JPA and DVB were close, but he asked to go -- and the team is making great headway under Osorio.

Angel was heavily rumored to go back to South America if he didn't get this done. The Red Bulls were also taking their time trying to get it done too.

Yeah, just read on the Red Bull Reader he was fielding offers from River Plate. Nice. Not surprised though, JPA is world class striker and leader, Red Bulls are extremely lucky to have him.
