Default Here's all I need to know (Willie vs. Jerry)

Here's Jerry Manuel on rookie Dan Murphy:

“He has shown some tremendous patience at the plate, he’s put together some excellent at bats, seeing a lot of pitches, and he’s going to be another guy who adds to us…with him, I don’t see us going backwards. I see him as a great addition to our lineup, with what he brings.”

Translated into Willie-speak:

"Let's not get too excited, now. This kid is what? 22-23 years old? He's gotta pay his dues first before we know. He's having a nice li'l run right now, but he's pretty raw. I wanna see him get in a nice li'l rhythm, then we'll see how good he is. But the jury's still out on this kid. I mean, let's not make him out to be Reggie Jackson or somebody..."

I can actually hear Willie's voice when I read that "translation"

LOL

I will say that was the one thing I really hated about Willie.

You didn't stand a chance if you were a young player under his watch.

I still LOL at how he totally wet blanketed Pagan's early season performance.

As much as I hated the way he went about it, I don't think Willie meant to disparage the kids he did. I think it was his way of trying to take pressure off them and not build too much expectations for the player with the fans. That being said, it did more harm than good, IMO, to the players.

He actually should have kept that to himself.

All he could have said, "He's doing a good job. He's still young, so we will bring along slowly.." Would have worked for me.

Murphy can hit...I said back in May that I think he's the best pure hitter the Mets have in the minors...but I get that feeling of dread anytime I see something hit to LF. Thus far he's gotten it done (even if it hasnt been pretty) so fingers crossed they can find some position for him.

He's not got the experience, but he's got enough althleticism (take that Omar!) to either make up for it and as we've seen make some nice jumping catches at the wall. May not last, but he's got enough natural ability and determination to be at least competent wherever they put him.

Maybe LF is that position. Give him some games out there and who knows. With Beltran and Chavez/Church, there is a lot of ground covered.

Might be. Certainly isnt 3B and I still can't see him being all that great at 2B long term (tho he wasnt horrible there in the couple of games I saw him at Bing).

If he can play it decently, make the routine plays, and get the footwork down... his bat should make up for any glove deficiency.

But he's played a nice LF so far.

When he got thrown out last night at third you could see how annoyed he was.

Then he glanced over and saw Wright thrown out, and he knew he was the cause.

They kept the camera on him long enough to see him close his eyes and mouth, "F***."

Nice to see.

Agreed. Anybody here remember Greg Luzinski? As far as I can see, this kid is alot better in the field than he was. Luzinski used to stand in his position FACING THE LEFT FIELD FOUL LINE. The late, great Joe Garagiolo explained that that position told the centerfielder "anything from the tip of my butt over is yours!"

Point being, if you have a good enough CF, your LF doesn't have to be a gold glove candidate.

In all honesty, how could anyone think it wise to admit they were "bi" on the Mofo of all places. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
