Default "Ace"'s Close and Late stats

Teams are batting .333 against "Ace" in the clutch "close and late" situations with a whopping .606 slugging percentage. But keep in mind there's nothing he can do about it.

I think you can blame that mostly on the chatter from the players behind him on the field. Clearly they should be more talkative and distracting the hitter. What do you want Santana to actually have to earn a win?

Johan could throw a shutout and the Mets would fail to score.

But...but...he should be able to inject all that money into his veins coupled with gamma rays to give him a "NOffense Sense" to know when he must make the other team score negative runs.

The guy had a two run lead in the 6th inning last night. He needed to get 9 more out (I'll give him a pass on the 9th and let that fall on Wagner) without giving up 2 runs. None or 1 would have sufficed. He didn't. He hasn't. He makes a butt load of money. He blames his teammates for errors even though he gave up a grand slam to Felix Hernandez. He doesn't have to give up negative runs. Just one less than his team scores. And not every time, either. Once per month might be nice though. Or is that too much to ask?

As opposed to what for the league or even other comparable pitchers? I would assume that most pitchers tire late in games, but I can't tell just from Santana's stat how much he differs from other pitcher, if at all.

Wow. What a stunning revelation: Hitters do better against a pitcher in their 3rd and 4th ABs as opposed to their first. Quick, call Bill James and let him know; this can change the game as we know it.

And giving up 2 runs against the Phils in that ballpark over 8 IP is what an "ACE" is supposed to do.

Message for those who think pitching "wins" are a silly stat yet worship at the altar of ERA. Great pitchers find a way to win games. Good ones just have nice ERA's.

Wait, so now the Mets didn't score any runs yesterday? Santana's run support is getting worse by the minute.

No, you're right. I would much rather have a pitcher who can't hold a two-run lead and loses 3-2 than one who gives up three runs throwing strikes when he already has a 5 run lead. ERA wins championships.

I wasn't talking about yesterday. I was simply replying to the statement that "Great pitchers find a way to win games."

Did you watch the game last night? Did you see the ground balls that scored the runs? It wasn't BBs or line drives; they were routine grounders that found holes.

When you handed Tom Seaver or Steve Carlton a two-run lead in the 5th inning the game was OVER. Santana pisses away leads like Bruce Berenyi.
