Default Season on the line who is your closer?

I think I honestly would choose Benitez.

My Nana TStyl.

At least when SHE tosses a meatball it's extra savory.

God, the Mets have had some awful closers.

The only closer I ever felt comfortable with was Randy Myers. And that was 20 years ago!!!!

Too bad Davey wasn't...

We have had our share of "Cardiac Kids" in Neil Allen, John Franco, Braden Looper, Armando Benitez, and now Billy Wagner.

Skip Lockwood turned in a few credible years for awful teams. Bob Apodaca was solid during those "bullpen by committee" years, too.

I'd second Randy Myers as the most intimidating and reliable.

I remember clearly saying when the Mets signed Wags that he was a White Benitez. Looks like I was proven right.

Jeez he's blown 5 saves in each of the last two years while saving 40 and 34 respectively. This year he has a 2.33 era with 13 saves and 4 blown saves - 3 of which have come recently. It's a rough stretch but he is not a terrible closer.

I think he'd have to gain at least 60 pounds first.

Three bad games in a week and he's as bad as Benitez?

Let's no go losing perspective people. This team is not nearly as good as the teams Benitez ruined.

Outside of Mariano Rivera and Jon Papelbon, how many closers are there over the last decade who have had a good enough multi-year stretch of success, complete with "clutch" showings, that you'd want them closing for you in a big spot? Joe Nathan and Francisco Rodriguez are probably in the mix, IMO. Billy Wagner's still probably the best of the next tier of basically solid closers who have had their share of awful stretches, sometimes when it mattered.

I'm not trying to excuse Wagner, but I don't think iffy closers are a Mets-specific problem.

DING, we have a winner. Not only that, as awesome as Papelbon is, he's not had the career to be put in Mariano's level. Hell, I don't know if there will EVER be a closer to match him again, career wise (yes, I am glossing over the elite closers of the past, as it's now a different kettle of fish). And Papelbon still hasn't had a career long enough to say he'd be as reliable as signing Wagner, as there have been plenty of closers dominate for a few years and fall into "human" levels of the Wagners of the world or lower.

Wagner is still among the best, and considering this season was effectively lost a long time ago, calling these games "big" is laughable.
