Default Are you willing to write off 2008 in order to rebuild?

This team is in dire straights. One of their best players (Church) is now on the DL due to the medical staff's incompetency. If the starters pitch well, the offense doesn't show up or the pen blows the game. If the starters get shelled the offense goes in lock-down mode. The Mets just got swept by one of the worst teams in MLB. Willie still has no clue how to manage. They are 7.5 games out already and 6 games out of the wild card.

Can they right the ship? I guess it's possible, but I have very little confidence that they can make a 180 turn like that. I assume the Phillies at some point will come back to reality, but even so they should win 90 games. That means the Mets have to go at least 60-40 the rest of the way. I don't see that happening.

Even if management made the call to rebuild, how would they go about doing it? They have so many old expensive players that no one wants. And their farm system is not ripe with talent.

If you want to rebuild, you have to write off 2009 & 2010 as well. Maybe 2011.

Rebuild or not, you can write off this season. And if changes aren't made in the off season from Omar on down, you can write off the 09-11 seasons too.

That would mean getting rid of everybody, including Wright and Reyes.

They are not backing up the truck anytime soon as long as those two, not to mention Santana (who they just signed), are around.

It doesn't matter what we here want. Joe Met Fan will have no part of a rebuilding, and attendance will show that.

Besides, you think that the Mets will have any part of rebuilding after moving into Citifield?

I'm convinced that it is necessary for all teams in every sport to do if they ever want to be truly dominant over a significant period of time. You have to purge it every once in awhile regardless of public perception, media scrutiny, or what city you operate in. You would just need to put together a business plan that will allow you to remain solvent while the fans are staying away.

Like I said though, that time is not now for the Mets, not when they have Reyes, Wright, and Santana.

It should have been done in 2003/2004. Howe lost a **** ton of games anyways, at least they could have gotten some player development out of it.

Just about every move Minaya has made in 2007/2008 has blown up in his face. When that happens to a GM, it's time for them to be removed.

Whoa.....SLOW DOWN.

C is set
SS is set
3b is set
RF is set
CF is set
Dare I say if that load at 2B ever gets his knees right, the Mets are solid there, too.

They have TWO frontline pitchers in Maine and Santana and the bullpen has depth.

This team has holes and needs work but they DO have a good amount of talent. Throwing it all away just for the sake of "backing up the truck" is very shortsighted.

Omar's plan to make the Mets an "athletic" success failed miserably. He had one taste of it in an extremely weak division and league, and then decided he could rest on his laurels, prop up who he wanted to prop up, and throw the occasional boatload of money at high priced (athletic-only) talent and it would all come together. This lazy attitude filtered down to the rest of the team.

When he, Willie and Delgado are gone after this disaster of a season, the Mets get to roll into 2009 as the 140+ million dollar underdog. The next GM, if he has any sense or balls, will find a way to dump Castillo to make a statement that there is a new not-so-athletic sheriff in town.

With a buildable nucleus of Wright and Reyes and to a lesser extent, Beltran, Santana and Maine (and Church if he's still alive), there may be hope on the horizon a little bit faster than we all think.

Totally agree. Yeah, we are all pissed off, but there is talent here. To compare the skill level of this team to other Mets failures like 2003 is absurd. The 2003 squad didnt have a QUARTER of this teams overall talent.

But does the core talent have any clue how to succeed?

I agree with all of this. There is no doubt things look dismal right now, but it may not be as bad as we all think. I still believe the nucleus of a very good team is here. If the Mets had a smart GM, and a real Manager, it would be a good step in the right direction, to improve this team, and show the fans that the Wilpons will not tolerate this crap. I also agree that the next GM must do whatever possible to get rid of the cancers on this team. Yes, there is a fair amount of it, but with a good GM, it can happen. It will probably take some time, but I'm not sure it would take several years. It could happen much sooner, if the right moves are made.

Let's hope the changes will start ASAP.

A good veteran manager can instill those values in them. A respectable veteran pickup can help them with it.

Signing **** won't.

There are still people here that haven't written off this season?

Really?
