Default Joe Torre, Baseball Genious

"He's a free swinger, and he's really dangerous," Torre said of Wright, who is hitting a whopping .579 (11 for 19) with four home runs in his career against Penny."

Free swingin' Wright is on pace for over a 100 walks this season.

"You can strike him out, but you have to get a count in your favor. And obviously, 2-0 is not that count."

Torre unlocks the mystery of the strikeout. You need at least two strikes before you can get one.

"And that second home run, you saw, he hit it over the right-field fence. So he's very tough to defend against because he's so aggressive."

Joefuscious says "hitting to right field is a sign of aggression."

"Willie did the best job of sitting I've ever seen. I thought Zim was good, but man, that willie. Met fans are lucky to have a manager capable of sitting like that. His sitting shows the young players what to do and lights a fire under the vets. He's very agressive like that with his ass cheek placement."

Torre sounds about as bright as Joe Morgan.

Good thing Torre stayed in baseball and didn't go to the ESPN booth. His interviews are as interesting as listening to an Al Gore global warming speech.

Torre was four rings, is third in wins all time and is one of the classiest men in the game. He can manage my team anytime.

I'm old enough to remember when Torre DID manage the Mets. It wasn't a happy time.

To be fair to Joe, even though I don't like him, here is the Mets team he had in 1979, one of the lowest points of the organization:

The 1979 New York Mets
Lee Mazzilli
Ed Kranepool
John Stearns
Jesse Orosco
Bruce Boisclair
Joel Youngblood
Craig Swan
Jeff Reardon
Doug Flynn
Neil Allen
Pat Zachry
Ron Hodges
Steve Henderson
Richie Hebner
Skip Lockwood
Willie Montanez
Tim Foli
Pete Falcone
Mike Scott
Dan Norman
Frank Taveras
Kelvin Chapman
Elliott Maddox
José Cardenal
Alex Treviño
Dock Ellis
Ed Glynn
Juan Berenguer
Ray Burris
John Pacella
Tom Hausman
Roy Lee Jackson
Kevin Kobel
Wayne Twitchell
Sergio Ferrer
Andy Hassler
Gil Flores

Lee Mazzilli Hit .303, all star
Ed Kranepool Former AS, one of the best LHPH in the business
John Stearns All star, Stole 25 bases as a catcher
Jesse Orosco We know this name...he didn't suck in '86.
Bruce Boisclair
Joel Youngblood
Craig Swan Had a kick-ass ERA that year; GTS thought the world of him
Jeff Reardon
Doug Flynn GG second baseman
Neil Allen One of the best relievers of the late 1970s; got us KH, eventually.
Pat Zachry Former Rookie of the Year
Ron Hodges
Steve Henderson
Richie Hebner Had been an all-star
Skip Lockwood
Willie Montanez Had been an all-star
Tim Foli
Pete Falcone
Mike Scott
Dan Norman
Frank Taveras Had been an all-star
Kelvin Chapman
Elliott Maddox
José Cardenal
Alex Treviño
Dock Ellis
Ed Glynn
Juan Berenguer
Ray Burris
John Pacella
Tom Hausman
Roy Lee Jackson
Kevin Kobel
Wayne Twitchell
Sergio Ferrer
Andy Hassler
Gil Flores
That team did have SOME talent. Craig Swan and Pat Zachary made a respectable 1-2. Neil Allen was one of the better closers of the late '70s. There were other players on the team who were better-than-fair.

Maybe we SHOULD blame "Clueless Joe" for the suckitude of the late '70s.

What makes a good manager? The ability to get a mediocre team to over-achieve.

Bobby V could have managed that '79 bunch to an 85 win season...
